Special Release Series. Seven years after we started brewing in Oregon, we decided the sky was not the limit. One year, two rockets and countless lab hours later, we successfully launched a payload of brewer’s yeast into outer space with the help of rocket scientists. After a much awaited return to Earth, the mission of creating space beer is now complete. Ground Control boldly combines local and out-of-this-world ingredients. This rich, complex Imperial Stout is brewed with Oregon hazelnuts, star anise and cocoa nibs, and fermented with an Ale yeast that survived a trip to space and back. Mankind will enjoy the sweet finesse of this beer that only fares better with time.

On tap at The University of Beer, Sacramento. Black colour. Aroma and flavour of chocolate / cocoa and roast malts, also hazelnuts. Only a hint of star anise. An unusual beer, but very good.

Bottle shared at a tasting. Dark brown, thin fizzy tan head, good retention. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, nuts, mild peppers. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, cherries, nuts. Full bodied, low carbonation, mild booze.

Draft @ Alibi Room. Dark brown. Has a light aroma, vaguely nutty and that thin chocolate sort of character. Sweet, little chocolate syrup character and even a bit fruity. Not really doing it for me.

Boxed bomber. Aroma is chocolaty, nutty, licorice, leather, tobacco, earthy, spacey, hints of Yog-Sothoth possibly. Pours black with ruby red highlights when held up to the light; has a finger of tan foam that lasts for a minute before collapsing into a ring. Taste is bittersweet with flavors of cocoa, bread, licorice, a light nutty character, slightly reminiscent of Nyarlathotep perhaps. Velvety texture, thinner than usual for style, but definitely not thin. Pretty good, but maybe not out of this world. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go shave my Shub-Niggurath.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
dark brown color, almost black, with small beige head. Mild comforting aroma of dark oven baked bread. Full bodied, but not too sweet; the dark malts provide a good harmony of roastiness and dark chocolate, roasted nuts; even more roasted nuts and rye in the final, and bread crust, quite bitter too, with warming alcohol.
Excellent beer, would easily pass for a rich Baltic Porter.

On tap at Green Dragon, pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma brings out hazelnuts and light roast. Flavour is robust, with lots of hazelnuts, candied sugar and roast. Quite complex and robust. Excellent.

Draft - Nice chocolate notes and a touch of spice. Jet black with a rich light brown head. Dark chocolate, light spice and a nice sweetness. Not sure about the nuts, but nice, not our of this world.
