A European-style Dark / Münchener Dunkel. Deep reddish-mahogany in color with sweet caramel malt, nutty and toffee notes, and roasted hints. Penn Dark has a moderate hopping rate and a crisp, clean lager beer finish. A surprisingly smooth dark beer.

Pour is a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is deffinatly sweet malt with a touch of roastyness. Flavor is again all malts with a bit of caramel left on the tounge after the swallow. Average to fair at best.

12oz bottle-pours a rich foamy light tan head and dark mahogany color. Aroma is sweet medium malt-caramel, fruit, roasty. Taste is sweet medium malt-caramel/some chocolate, quite fruity, roasty, secondary light hops bite. Medium body with light, sweet finish. OK carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a darkish & translucent brown with a one/two finger tan head. Aromas are straightforward roasted malt. Flavor is roasted malt with a little bit of a tartness and some sawdust like earthiness. Comes off a little thin in the end, though. Not bad, but does little to distinguish itself.

This brew pours a dark brown color with a medium thin beige head with decent retention. Stringy lacing. Roasted malt and nuts in the nose. Medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Roasted malt and caramel flavors, along with lightly floral hops. The finish is mildly nutty and sweet and does not last long. Decent overall.

bottle - Pours dark brown with a thin head. It has a mild malt aroma. The flavor is mild, sweet caramel malt and quite bland. There’s a little hops in there and it’s a too thin, too watery beer. Sure it’s drinkable, but there’s just not nearly enough flavor here. Poor.

Moderately strong bouquet of chocolate malts and maple syrup. Dark brown and clear, with a thin tan head, some lacing. Rich and tart flavor of good hops, raisins, and smoke. Hop finish and well timed. The alcohol isn’t well concealed and is especially prevalent at the end.

Bottle. Dark color. Alright aroma, but a little bland compared to other Dunkels I have had. Caramel and malts. Nothing else too special.

Updated 2020 covid times: Still drinking and enjoying this. Got a bottle recently for old times sake. Its dark, its refreshing and has just enough bitterness to let you know its well made darker beer, nothing more. Never insulting yet it has body. Well made. Still one of most favorite affordable dark beers. Old rating 2008: I don’t get it, it says pure barley malt lager beer but on this site it also says Hallertau hops! Nice label, big viking woman riding a light colored horse. 12 oz brown bottle. Pop the lid and it smells like a porter or stout. Also has a floral or fruity attribute about the aroma. Pours very dark, but transparent, reddish brown. Initial flavor hit of Roastyness that is not bitter. A really good beer! Perhaps a hint of lingering bitter on the finish, but just barely.

This lager poured a nice brown colour with almost no head. Even after a vigourous pour. Scents include smoke, caramel and bread. First sip was nice with flavours of sweet roasted malts and a little smoke flavour too. The finnish is sweet and the palate is a little bit floral.
