A European-style Dark / Münchener Dunkel. Deep reddish-mahogany in color with sweet caramel malt, nutty and toffee notes, and roasted hints. Penn Dark has a moderate hopping rate and a crisp, clean lager beer finish. A surprisingly smooth dark beer.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a glass. Clear chestnut brown with small off-white head. Aroma is light nuts, medium/light body, low carbonation, and some little-bubble lacing. Taste is dark malt, some nuts, and hints of chocolate. A little plain, but good.

12 oz bottle $2.25 purchased @ Julio’s Liquors in Westborough, MA. Used a lager glass. Mahogany wood color with thick head that shrank to a thin layer. Light lace. Light malty aroma, German malt for sure. The flavor is also on the light side. Roasted malt, caramel, and light burnt nuts. This isn’t going to… “WOW! You” or anything but, it’s a solid example of the style and has nice basic aspects of malt and nuttiness. Good flavor for a dark lager.

Pours dark mahogany into a Sam glass. Off-white head with good retention recedes leaving sheet lacing. Dark caramel aromas. Sweet caramel dark pit fruit upfront. Dry lasting finish.

Pours dark amber, brownish head. Aroma is roasted. Taste, reminds me of so many German Schwartz/Dunkel. Roated / caramel malts, floral hops. Aftertaste is watery and weak, has some hops and low carbonation.

Its almost unconscionable that I have never tried this beer! Nice toffee/melanoidin nose, nutty with a hint of chocolate, vaguely earthy. A background of spicy hops. Garnet color with a foamy head. Nice clean presentation with a full rounded toffee malt presence. Tingling hops help segue to the balanced finished, which is earthy, semi-dry, and lightly hopped. Easy drinking, like any good dunkel would be a good partner to a wide variety of foods.

Bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville. Pours a cranberry brown with a minimal head. Kinda boring aroma of strong, strong grain. Damn. Taste is straight up roasted malt. Cocoa puffs? Nutty, earthy, grainy.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head. Aroma of rasins, malt, toffee and nuts. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong nutty flavours up front with some milder malt taste and a bit of toffee - not much else. Aftertaste shows a little sour grapes, but aside from that - more nuts and toffee. Overall, a decent beer, nothing special - if you have the choice, drink their wheat and pass on this. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 26-May-2008.
