12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, fudge, brownie batter, toasted dark/brown bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, herbal, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready/rye malt, chocolate, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, fudge, brownie batter, toasted dark/brown bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, herbal, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/piney hop, roast/char bitterness; and peppery rye spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, fudge, brownie batter, toasted dark/brown bread, nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, herbal, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready/rye malt, chocolate, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and minimal acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/silky, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.7%. Overall this is an awesome imperial chocolate American porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready/rye malt, chocolate, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV; even with the increasingly bitter/drying finish. Very rich and well rounded malt complexity, with great chocolate presence, and balancing earthy hops. Kind of a dessert beer in a way, but the drying char bitter/spicy rye finish keeps it feeling like an American porter on style. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

355ml bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown almost black with a small, short lived, light brown head that leaves spotty lacing. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, toffee and dates. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, licorice and a hint of vanilla with a dry, bitter, spicy rye finish. Medium to full body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty.

Its pretty good but basically is just another decent chocolate Porter that’s kind of amped on the Cocoa.

Bottle - Dark sweet chocolate and roast. Jet brown with a rich light brown head. Dark roast and bitter chocolate with a bitter and sweet finish. Just as it describes.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: pours oily black with a dark beige head that leaves lacing. Aroma is spice, chocolate, loads of roasted malts and hints of coffee. Taste is fairly bitter and spicy at first. Moderates as it goes down. Rather on the sweet sode of things. Relatively good.

Pour is a dark black with a large creamy tan head. Aroma is pretty much all bitter dry bakers chcocolate. Flavor is again more bakers chcocolate with a subtle spicy rye. As this warms it becomes a little less bitter with more or a milk stout lactose sweetness. Finish is silky with residual bitterness. It’s a solid rye porter just a little harsh around the edges.

Very nice. Lots of roast, with notes of vanilla, chocolate and some bitterness from the rye. Pours black with mocha head and lacing. Bitter finish. Creamy, velvety texture. Thick consistency. Bottle.

Deep rich brown coloured body with a nice small one centimetre tall deep brown coloured head. Aroma of chocolate, earth, mushrooms, meat, rye, grain and way way more chocolate - tons of it. Full-bodied; Strong robust chocolate flavour with some ancient and specialty grains, a hit of rye and coffee, but a lot of chocolate notes on the finish as well - deep and strong with a good sweetness to finish it all off. Aftertaste shows a rounded malt and chocolate flavour with a little earth and bite, but the rye is noticeable and mellow, but the chocolate shows the nice sweetness at the tail end to finish this off very effortlessly. Overall, a nicely layered beer with some rye and grain flavour at first then going to a smooth chocolate and earthy flavour and ending with an alcohol bite, but more than covered up by the pure chocolate sweetness. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 20-November-2014 for US$1,79 sampled at home in Washington on 22-February-2015.
