Inspired by our head brewer’s cafe con leche-fueled travels in Key West, this is a milk stout with some kick. Local coffee from Dynamite Roasting Co. is cold-extracted and added post fermentation to this sweet, creamy beer.

Sample at the taproom. Flat black color with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes gradually to a film. Small patches of lace. Roast malt, coffee and chocolate aroma. Light-bodied with a roasty coffee and malt character, with some mild chocolate in the background. The finish is sweet with a mocha aftertaste. Above average overall.

Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is a real nice roasted cold pressed coffee. Flavor is more bitter coffee with a nice roasted malt left on the tongue. This was missing that silky sweet smoothness and body of most milk stouts but the coffee flavor is pretty intense.

Heavy coffee acidity with a smoky undercurrent. Not too sure about the developing tartness--gives it a metallic unpleasantness that distracts from the strong coffee front. Finishes a bit light, slightly bitter with a mild mocha fade.

Black pour with just a touch of garnet at the edges. Sticky tan head. The aroma is dusty chocolate, and roasting coffee. The flavor is chocolate, some vanilla and coffee, delivered on a lightly sweet palate. Medium body.

Bottle. Almost opaque deep brown body. Frothy tan head, diminishing. Aroma of coffee bean, roasted malt, vanilla, metal. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/creamy texture, lively carbonation. Coffee acidity and bitterness in the taste, but also a hint of cream. Enjoyable.

Location: Draft at the brewery, 1/2/15
Aroma: It has a big coffee aroma, with some roasted and chocolate notes
Appearance: A dark brown colored beer with a decent head and some coating lace
Flavor: It has a roasty flavor, with some light balancing sweetness comes through later
Palate: It has a creamy, smooth mouthfeel, is medium-full bodied, with a dry finish
Overall Impression: I enjoyed this. It has a pretty nice coffee-forward flavor and aroma, which works rather well. The mouthfeel is quite nice too. Well done with this one. This ended up being my favorite of the Hi Wire beers.

Draft at Urban Orchard. Clear maroon color, tan head. Aroma of cocoa and coffee grounds. Taste has a bit of unexpected peppery spice and subtle heat on a roasty background. Nice.
