Saison Brewed with Brewery Ommegang from Cooperstown, New York

Collaboration No. 4 - Saison celebrates our partnership with Duvel Moortgat and our mutual respect for the brewers of Ommegang. A base of pale malt, corn, oats, rye and wheat is spiced with coriander, orange and lemon peel, and grains of paradise. The resulting wort is fermented separately with the house Belgian yeast of each brewery to allow the character of each yeast to shine. The final beers were blended before packaging.

750 ml bottle purchased at One Stop Market Haverhill, MA. Hazy Amber gold with very thin head in a snifter. Aroma is spicy yeast, oranges and sweet grain. Flavor has a large amount of sugar upfront with the fruit in the center leading into the spicy yeast finish. Light earthy note in there also. Sweet yet good.

Bottle. A- Peaches, mangoes, apricots, spice, funk, dough, subtle hops. A- Amber color, slightly hazy liquid, off white head. T- Peaches, apricots, slight funk, citrus, slight bitterness. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, juicy finish. O- Reminded me of Firestone Walker’s Double Jack’s saison sibling. Lots of stone fruits and very juicy but some funk instead of intense hops. Nice beer. The spices seemed a little subtle but otherwise great.

Bottle. Pours a hazy deep gold with an amber hue and a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of earthy citrus with some light Belgian yeast with a bit of sweet grains underlying. Flavor has sweet grains and a bit of cookie with light fruits and Belgian yeast backing.

Sample at the Brookhaven Beer Growler. Pale, yellow, hazy color, with a medium, white head. Big aroma of oranges and lemons, with some cloves, white bread, and candi sugar. Sweet and citrusy, with a little acidic tartness. Medium body, smooth, acidic, and crisp. Overall, this is a nice, flavorful saison. Not that complex or interesting, but well balanced and flavorful.

Pours a hazy copper - lively carbonation that kicks up a huge, frothy, lasting head - looks pretty amazing, actually - nose is a bit sweeter than I had hoped, but it is pleasant and complex - notes of cobweb, mustiness, overripe apple, pear, clove, lightly peppery phenolics - it’s actually a rather lovely aroma, really, once I get over the sweeter characteristics - despite the high carbonation, it is fairly soft in the mouth - sweet up front, with notes of baked apple, but a drier malt character eventually settles in - dusty yeast, melon, pear - mildly peppery spiciness, a touch of banana - finish is rustic and spicy - not exactly my idea of a saison, but a mighty fine Belgian ale.

Pour is a golden with a large white head. Aroma is fruity and estery. Flavor is a little yeasty with some honey malt and almost a dry wheat. Finish has a nice creaminess and I guess spice. This is a simple easy drinking saison. No bells or whistles with this one. This is all about the 2 house yeasts.
