This sour ale is produced by aging our barleywine in bourbon barrels for extended periods of time (as long as 2 years in some cases!) The aroma is reminiscent of earthy red wines with a background of caramel and honey and just a hint of wood and sourness. The flavor is intensely sour with a touch of acetic acid and notes of brown malt, toast, and ripe red fruit. The bourbon character adds a savory, woody component that yields subtle notes of coconut and vanilla.

Location: Draft at ChurchKey, 11/1/14
Aroma: Sour aroma, has some fruit, and a bit of wood
Appearance: The pour is murky reddish-brown with a small head
Flavor: The flavor is along the same lines, spur and fruity, wood notes
Palate: Medium bodied, slight heat, a little funky on the finish
Overall Impression: I thought this was a solid one. Pretty nice example of the style. Worth trying for sure.

4oz pour at Churchkey’s Night of the Living Ales 2014. Pours a clear caramel amber with loads of creamy, lacing white head. Nose has some rubber, cherry, wood pulp, a little herbal. Flavor is acetic, some candy though too, mild berry, grape, wood pulp, slightly vegetal, some apple notes as well. Tart, hot finish. Not my thing.

Draft at Churchkey. Clear maroon color, tan head. Decent aroma of plums and prunes. Taste is an odd combo of bitter and sour that didn’t work for me, although others in our group liked it.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours brown with a beige head. Light sour aroma - maybe medium. Med body or better. Flavor is shockingly, nay headbangingly, sour. Moves to fruit, oak and than rather pure bourbon notes. Sour moderates evenly with time, finishing a bit like a must red wine barrel. A must for sour lovers.

Draft - Sweet vinous and oak notes with a bit of malt vinegar. Deep brown with a rich light brown head. Sour cherry, brown sugar, oak and a well balanced sweet and sour finish. Very nice.

On tap at mad mex. Nice dark pour, with a thick head. Dull sweet beery aroma. Off the bat I can tell it tastes much better than yer typical american barley wine, after all it was listed as a barley wine at the bar. Has some tartness in there fer sure. but that strong alky in yer face thing is still going on. ITs just less apparent with the tart thing happening. Yes, the wild aspect saves this beer. Finish is cloying tart alky laced fruit. Yes, in the end one of the better American barley wines if it actually is one.

On tap at Brouwer's for Big Wood, pours a hazy orange amber with a small tan head. Aroma of sour fruits, bourbon barrels and caramel malts. Flavour is exactly like you'd expect a sour / barley wine hybrid to taste like - full complex profile of caramel malts, then the sour notes completely dominate - very tart / acidic. Enjoyable, but a little too sour.

Taster at Bavarian Lodge. Full barley wine smell, accent on the "wine" portion. And some sour cherries in the nose, too. Very dark, opaque barley wine brown. A very thin ring of foam, but that just allows the barkeep to slip more of this potion into the glass. Taste vacillates between a fresh barley wine and one that has been soured, possibly from oxidation. In other words, it’s one of the ways an aged BW can go, but here they pushed into that early. I’m reminded of the "green" Schlitz that ruined the brand in the 1970s. Still, the cherry note is nice, and I can’t deny feeling warmed by its alcohol. Some vanilla, bourbon and sherry flavors, even a bit of oak tannin. But I have had enough barrel-aged homebrew club projects that turned out this way, too.

Poured up on tap at Papago brewpub on April 15th, 2011 with amber – copper body and thin tan head. The mild aroma emits soured cherries, faint malts, faint fruity esters and a sense of bourbon booze. The taste is full up tartness with un-ripe cherries and soured citrus fruit mixing with a mild level of dark fruity esters. It then picks up notes of bourbon and then lemon like acidity into the finish. The tart acidic finish creates a puckering sensation. Fully sour forward brew.

Tap at good life on long island. Pours reddish amber with funky nose. Tast of dark cherries, oak, earth, vanilla, some booze as well. It’s tart and bitter. Quite enjoyable
