Bottle from Beer Ma. Smuttlabs The Stallion 11% Imperial Stout aged in red wine barrels Geez 11% if I’d known I probably would’ve put off openingvthis until I had a friend to help me. Oh well... An inky black pour that had a rusty looking head of foam but it was gone so fast it left me wondering if I’d imagined it. The aroma is potent and features cacao, red wine and boozy fruity elements from far away but on closer sniff the chocolate comes to the fore but you get smoke and red wine as well. Full to medium bodied the taste gives an Ashey-smokey flavor (peat?) then red wine vinous fruit before some oak woodsy and chocolate elements. Not boozy tasting but it gives you a pleasing warmth and is smoother than I anticipated. An interesting take on a BA Imperial Stout.

c&c bottle #132-trade+thanks to Johnnnnieeeeee. Awesome. While this isnt right up my alley, I shared it with my Dad who likes simple darker beers and he enjoyed this gem too. Minimal quickly disappearing tan head-jet black that sheets and leaves an oil slick. A-apple/boozy, dk malt-molasses/ashy/leather. T-follows, earthy with an apple trailer. A great sipper.

375 ml bottle shared by Phatdog1, awesome share, thanks! Bottle number 123 of 925. Massive oil slick when swirled around in the snifter. No head and pitch black. Aroma is pretty awesome, chocolate, oak barrel and brandy.
The flavor is off somehow. Funky oak, tobacco, dirty socks and and sharp copper penny note. What the hell went on here? The alcohol hasn’t mellowed out at all either. We really were hoping this would develop, it didn’t. Then realized the base stout was 2009. Yeah, it makes sense why we were tasting oxidation. Not a good thing.

375 mL bottle, #664, from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Pours an inky dark brown color with a thin ring of head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, brandy, wood, caramel, mild alcohol. The taste is brandy, chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, wood, dark fruit, raisin, mild booze. Medium-full bodied, low carbonation, very smooth. Exceptional beer.

Bottle @ Armin’s apartment, courtesy of lukaduke. Thanks Luke ! Pours a black appearance with a thin brown head. Rich chocolate, quite fruity, light anise nose. Smells very nice. Pretty intense flavor. Thick dark chocolate, huge date, apple, grape flavor. Definitely showing some age, but geeez, this has a killer, spicy brandy flavor. Delicious.

Bottle from Bert’s Finally wrangled the cork out and there was no pop. Damn it I got a flat bottle. Pours a inky oily black color with six or seven small bubbles on the edge of the glass. The aroma is outstanding. Light caramelized sugars and a hint of roasted grain with some pretty solid vinous oaked apple coming through. Hints of toasted coconut and alcohol round this out nicely. The flavor is sweet brown sugary chocolate maltiness with some solid vinous apple coming through. Light oak and vanilla finish us off nicely. Thick body with a non existent level of carbonation and a sweet syrupy mouthfeel. I am so bummed this one had no bubbles because it is an otherwise beautiful beer! If I can find another bottle I will adjust my rating.

Tap at Pony Bar. Dark brown pour with a huge, dense beige head. Mostly sweet, dark and roasted malt aroma, though there are definitely some apple notes. Also chocolate. Flavor is sweet, the brandy is present, as are pleasant candied dark fruits. The faintest hints of coffee and smoke, particularly in the finish. Medium to big in body with average carbonation, and mild burn. Overall very good.
