Los Vivos y Los Muertos, The Quick and The Dead

We bring delight to our dance of a decaying mortal tune. The beauty of contrasts, of opposites and the shores on which they clash is the inspiration behind Los Vivos y Los Muertos. When The Rare Beer Club asked us to brew up something from the fringe of our imagination, we thought what better and more appropirate for this autumnal season than this?

Cheers and Mahalo Plenty

2013 keg on draft. I didn't even know this beer or that it's worth aging. News Flash, it wasn't. Can smell the old right away. Stale cardboard right there behind the tart lemon nose. Flavor is less that way but dulled and soggy malts behind what was probably a nicely tart and lively beer.

Gott.

RB Odense Summer Gathering 2017. Cloudy golden with a small white head. Fruity-funky aroma of pineapple, grapefruit and pear. Dry, fruity flavour with incredibly fine JP house character. A little bit thin, the low alcohol shows

Bottle bought @ Kihoskh. Hazy golden pour with a big frothy white head. Pleasantly fruity funky nose with light herbal notes. Hay, dry soil, white pepper corns, lime zest & yoghurt. Tiny sour & slightly bitter. Dry, tiny tart, slightly astringent & tiny mealy mouthfeel. Light raw pumpkin, lime & lemon balm. Green apples. Solid, but this brewer that I adore can do better than this. --- Beer merged from original tick of Los Vivos Y Los Muertos Saison on 10 Feb 2017 at 20:29 - Score: 7. 750mL bottle, I believe one and only batch from 2014, shared by tectactoe on 7/25/15.
Very light blonde colored beer shows good clarity and is topped by a moderate amount of white head that recedes fairly steadily to cover.
Heavy acidity in the nose is streaked with barrel tannins, vanilla and oak-like sourdough notes. Pretty perfumey, or perhaps that’s just a euphemism for sharp. Not boozey, obviously, but just too much wood graininess mixed with heavy, dry acidity. Lime and pumpkin done well, though and are in the background (lime) and non-existent (pumpkin).
After really enjoying La Roja Kriek, I was hoping for something more along those lines. While that one is certainly sour, it’s not like the recent Jolly Pumpkin trend of smash-you-in-the-face with barrel character. And it’s not even the extreme sourness that bothers me, hell, Cantilon is my favorite brewery, so bring on the sourness, but there just isn’t much else in the JP beers these days than a whole boatload of oak and sourness. All that said, this one isn’t the biggest offender, and it’s not so sour as to dominate, but it still just seems like a mouthful barrel and acids. Body is light, with some wateriness that seems appropriate. Minor astringency issues but hey, it’s still worlds better than Crooked Stave!
