When our friends and neighbors at Brinley shipped us the barrels used to make their Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum from their distillery on St. Kitts, we were given the opportunity to create a beer that would take advantage of wood rather than the other way around. We looked to coax complexity out of the marriage of a barrel’s soul and a brew’s potential, not just to bomb a huge beer with huge flavor. The rum that lives in these barrels for four years integrates its spice to the wood so well that it ends up reminiscent of a Bananas Foster. A sturdy brown honey porter seemed the best host to receive the ghosts from Shipwreck’s old home. We started with a base of deep malts looking for notes of coffee and chocolate, then enhanced them with the floral bouquet of local wildflower honey and the preservative strength of 10% ABV while keeping the body sensible. This was put in the casks to meld with the vanilla, wood, and spice notes, toned down by the oxidative effect of a year in the cellar. Drink Shipwreck Porter because a barrel should be so much more than a depth charge.

Growler. Pours a hazy copper with small beige head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is cocoa, roast, dark fruit. Medium body, boozy, roast, coconut, spice, nice sweetness, very good.

Number 2800. Been hunting this for a long time. Growler from Spirits Unlimited in Toms River, NJ. Opaque brown color topped by a dense frothy tan head. Wonderful dark malt nose is reminiscent of fresh baked Oatmeal Raisin cookies. First sip is smooth, earthy and complex. Toasted oats, dark rum, dark corn syrup, toasted pecans, toffee and toasted raisin bread. Sweet, sticky mouthfeel. Warming alcohol, though subdued. Long, chewy, cloying malty finish and aftertaste. Arguably, one of the best porters I have ever tasted, right up there with Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter and Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald. A must have and worth seeking out.

Growler with thanks to nimbleprop! Pours deep clear ruby black with a medium brown head creamy and fairly slow to dissipate, leaving nice lacing. Aroma is roasty with notes of tobacco and chocolate, hints of rum. Flavor is light plus sweet and light plus bitter, roasty, tobacco, chocolate, spiced rum, a touch of mocha/coffee. Medium body and a nice creamy mouthfeel. A bit hot perhaps, but really a nice beer.

32oz growler from the brewery pours a murky black with some thin, creamy off white head. Nose has quite a bit of booze, burnt caramel, some soy sauce, a little worcestershire too, some malt, licorice, molasses. Flavor follows right along, boozy, sweet, lots of umami notes too though, burnt caramel, some dark chocolate, a little tiramisu, Kahlua, burnt coffee, dark rum. Full, sticky finish.
