Octoberfest’s decidedly malty flavor comes from a generous portion of Vienna Malts. The maltiness is balanced by German and Czech Republic noble hops for dryness. The balance between the malt and the hops and the long, cold (30 degrees F) maturation process make this an exceptionally drinkable beer.

Paid $1.49 for a 12-oz single. Deep amber with a large frothy head. Aroma is sweet malts. Flavor is full of hops, with some intermingling spices... some bittersweetness in there that’s quite tasty.

2004 Batch:
12 August 2004 Brew Date, Sampled on 02-February-2005:
Clear deep copper & amber coloured body with a thin off-white head. Aroma of malt, pumpkin pie, spice, nutmeg and some sweet nuttiness. Light-bodied; Sharp astringent taste with the nuttiness most predominant. After that, the malt and sugars show a little. Aftertaste is mellow and unsophisticated. Overall, less than impressed from my local brewery. Thanks Phil (haddon90) for the sample - this is the only bottle I had from the 2004 batch! Rating for this tasting: 6,2,5,2,10
2003 Batch:
Orange in colour with a very thick (2 centimetre) dense white head. Very carbonated appearance with small bubbles rising on the sides of the cup (brewery tour). Strong malt and hop aroma which is a bit odd for the style. No other crazy essences...just strictly malt and hops. Medium-bodied; Strong initial malt flavour with stronger-than-normal hop kick for the style. No spice or pumpkin characteristics in this one, just a straight-forward beer. Aftertaste very malt-bittering, but in a good way. Overall, a hoppier Marzen than average, but lacks complexity in the flavours. Worth buying this over any of the macrobrewed Seasonals (Sam & Pete’s come to mind) if you are in the Washington area. I had this on draught at the Old Dominion Brewpub in Ashburn, Virginia on 23-August-2003.

from tap, slightly too cold: Brown amber, lightly carbonated. Fruity tastenotes, but did not wow me. A bit watery in the finish.
