We were inspired for this special, cloudy abbey beer by how the monks of old used to brew small amounts of beer for their own consumption. After all, the Fathers are entitled to a tasty glass of beer to quench their thirst too. But aware of their obligations as they were, they created a version with less alcohol. This allowed their minds to stay clear for work and prayer. Fortunately, the lower alcohol content had no effect on the characteristic abbey beer flavour.

After having successfully launched a dubbel, a tripel and a few derivatives, tradition in Belgium dictated that a session ’blonde’ should follow - so here is Ename Pater. Very thick and frothy, egg-white, heavily cobweb-lacing head remaining completely closed most of the time, hazy straw blonde robe with warm peachy hue. Aroma of raw green potatoes, even a touch of bleached celery, some banana ester, unripe pear, slowly and incompletely cooked broccoli (not DMS), near-fermenting garden weeds (nettles), white bread, withering sorrel, minerals, chalk, unripe gooseberry, straw, coriander seed, cooked turnip, field flowers, bitter honey, sourdough, vague hints of stale sweat, green olive, raw horseradish, lemon zest, green apple peel. Crisp, fruity onset, some banana and unripe peach but generally low in sweetness, some ’dim’ unripe gooseberry sourishness, hints of green apple and yellow plum, rounded and (too) well-carbonated, bit minerally, souring a bit, resulting in a slightly coarsened but otherwise smooth, still ’full’ mouthfeel, appropriate for this particular style. Lightly bready middle with sharper grainy edges, some retronasal spicy yeastiness enhanced by a certain - but not too excessive - coriander seed soapiness, leading to a mildly drying finish involving ’bright green’ grassy and moderately herbal (green tea) hop bitterness, more so than in many other Belgian blondes with an abbey beer image coming from more industrial producers; ends juicy and softly hoppy at the same time, quenching and easy-going, while the expected coriander presence lingers as well as a trace of indifferent soapiness. Soft, ’herbal’ and a bit more hoppy than usual, this is quite alright actually, obviously not very ambitious and very simple, but there is a kind of ’greenness’ to it which I can appreciate. The whiff of sulfuric cooked vegetables is easily forgotten under somewhat more ’flattering’ - yet still shy - hints of unripe fruit and greenish hops. Just another pointless addition to the indistinct and vast range of Belgian blondes, for sure, but in comparison with its direct competitors in the same segment - think Leffe Blonde, Grimbergen Blond and Tongerlo Blond - this is very clearly above average. If you must try a simple ’blonde’ (basically Belgium’s equivalent to the British golden ale) when here in the Low Countries, this would not be the worst choice to make. Have a point for that - but obviously it remains a straightforward thirst quencher with no higher ambitions whatsoever. As a starting point for Belgium’s top-fermented beers, this is quite alright and feels very natural and trustworthy, though I would recommend e.g. Witkap Pater Stimulo or - if you can get it - Westvleteren Blond and Westmalle Extra far above this.

Bottle. Hazy blond with a large white head. Aroma of blood orange, sherbet, sugary dough, some herbs. Light bodied, excessive carbonation.Sweet sugary dough, some peach bubblegum and that’s about it until a somewhat obvious and crude citrusy dry-hopping kicks in. Decent bitterness. OK.
