Armand’4 Herfst Oude Geuze is a blend of 1, 2 and 3 year old Lambic, brewed, aged, blended and bottled by Armand Debelder. This one-time and possibly the last bottling comes in a fancy Asti Spumante Champagne bottle. Armand only used Challenger hops in this brew. He’s in fact the only lambic-brewer to use Challenger hops to make his Geuze. 60 % malted barley, 40 % wheat, aged hops and water. Each season’s geuze has an unique and different blend.

Bottle on the train to Brussels for Paul’s Pre-Wedding Fiesta. Pours a very cloudy orange with a soft, white cream head. Big tart nose with lightly toasted grass, fresh grass and citrus rind. Light to medium sweet flavor with fine sugar, huge grass, big sourness, some faint pine needles. Light to medium bodied with lively and smooth carbonation. Nice dry finish, faintly lip-puckering, with plenty of grassy bitterness, some earth, some lemon citrus tartness and medium sweetness. Incredibly drinkable and well balanced. Worth the acclaim. Can’t really find much fault here.

Bottle, 75cl, at RBNAG-11. A gusher, producing an unclear, golden-orange body under a small, off-white head. The aroma is dominated by sourish fruityness, with some funkyness as well. It’s tart and dry on the palate, with flavors of lemon, orange peel, some barnyardish funk and it lasts for a good while. It’s a nice beer, that’s for sure, but it don’t impress in any way. The least interesting of the first three Armand’4 beers. Would very much like to repeat it though. 111015

Slightly hazy light amber colour, quite firm (for a geuze) white head. Aroma of citrus, apricot, fruity lambic yeast, light rubber, yoghurt, barn and straw. Slight wet dog. Quite sour flavour, citrus, wood, marmelade, quite tart. Quite astringent finish, sour, yoghurt, very lively.
Well balanced, very beautiful geuze. Alltogether rather brilliant, one of the highlights of the evening. Armand mag inderdaad fier zijn.
(From 75cl bottle @ ZZT IV. Thanks for sharing, Milan!)

75cl bottle @ ZZT IV. Unclear almost opaque orange color, medium sized white head that leaves a nice lacing. Smell slightly sour, some rubber. Taste only lightly sour again, apricot, some other fruits. Very balanced taste, but too much carbo. Medium bodied.

Bottle @ ZZT4. Opaque orange with a big white head. Smells car tire, dusty, slightly sour. Tastes sour, fruity, apricot. Good carbo, medium body. Great taste, but the rubber smell doesn’t work for me.

Bottle shared at a sour tasting at Noam’s office. Hazy deep orange with a fluffly beige head. Lovely funky oaky aroma with citrus, tropical fruits and a bit of leather. Sour lemony flavor, a bit spicy, with some bitterness and a hint of hops. Medium-bodied, strong carbonation. Great.

Bottle shared at my 30:th birthday tasting on May 5 (30 år av Surt). Bottle bought @ Etre Gourmet. Pours deep reddish and yellowish brown with a huge creamy and frothy white head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sour with ripe grapes, grapefruit juice, orange zest, lemon zest, hay, barnyard, horse blanket, pineapple, leather, ripe apples, wood and hints of sweat. Taste is very sour with leather, grapefruit juice, lemon zest, ornge zest, hay, horse blanket and wood. Mouthfeel is tart, dry and medium to full bodied. Finish is our and tart with wood, grapefruit juice, lemon zest and horse blanket.

This is an excellent gueuze in its own right, but just a hair behind the Zomer. It looks about the same, opaque orange with a full white head. Not quite as our as the Zomer, but still sour enough that it does not disapoint. Some citrus. Dry yeast finish.
