One of the most complex beers we’ve ever attempted. A blend of two barrel-aged imperial saisons – one black, one red – which has in turn then been aged in rum barrels, it is an enormous, intricate beer.

A baseline of warm, smoky raisin and plum, followed by punchy flavour elements coming to the fore – coconut, mint and blackcurrant. There’s a long undercurrent of treacle toffee, before the finish darkens to liquorice, star anise amidst a touch of honey sweetness.

Malts: Cara, Carafa, Crystal, Extra Pale, Flaked Oats, Wheat
Hop: Mount Hood

Appearance: Pours almost completely black with a tiny layer of foam. Oily.Aroma: complex, multilayered aroma; roastiness, leather, hints of tobacco, treacle. Sweet, toffee and treacle. Also a tad sour.Flavour: Sweet and flat mouthfeel, followed by an explosion of roast. Very vinous, some berries, toffee and treacle, a little warming, some chocolate. Has something of a chocolate dessert. Whisky hints. Medium dry finish with long lasting sweetness (almost sickly sweet). Nice, complex experimental beer with very interesting flavours.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Near black, beige head. Rich aroma of coconut, vanilla-ish bourbon and chocolate. Sweet with full body and rounded mouthfeel. Chipotle, chocolate and vanilla. Peppery warming finish. Rich and mouthfilling. Pretty much as far from a saison as you can go, but damn tasty.
