One of the most complex beers we’ve ever attempted. A blend of two barrel-aged imperial saisons – one black, one red – which has in turn then been aged in rum barrels, it is an enormous, intricate beer.
A baseline of warm, smoky raisin and plum, followed by punchy flavour elements coming to the fore – coconut, mint and blackcurrant. There’s a long undercurrent of treacle toffee, before the finish darkens to liquorice, star anise amidst a touch of honey sweetness.
Malts: Cara, Carafa, Crystal, Extra Pale, Flaked Oats, Wheat
Hop: Mount Hood

Draught @ Brewdog Helsinki. Pours dark brown, almost black with a small head. Aroma of ripe fruits, vinous berries, raisins, hints of rum, wood, oak, spices, earthy notes, malts and a touch of roastiness. Taste is sweetish, smooth and woody with some oak, vinous berries, hints of rum, ripe fruits, raisins, plums, yeast, toffee, syrup and earthiness. Finish is complex, vinous and oaky with some warming alcohol, raisin, berries, ripe fruits, syrup and licorice. Quite interesting and surprisingly tasty.

Keg at BD CJ. It pours deep brown with a sturdy tan head. The nose is rich, big sweet vanilla oak upfront, whisky, dried berry, fruit cake, charred wood, liquorice, petroliferous almost brown bread, mint chocolate. The taste is bitter-sweet, pretty big rummy alcohol hit, very fruity indeed, grape, fig, dried cherry, loads of wood, varnish, liquorice, spice, fruit cake, alcohol heat, light acidity, earth and light charred notes with a lingering warming finish. Full body, fine carbonation and slick mouth-feel. Proper bonkers stuff. Aroma is pretty great and it is rather complex. Perhaps a bit rough around the edges atm and could be done with a bit of time before popping a bottle. Good fun nonetheless!

Draught @Brewdog helsinki. Pours black with a thick head. Aroma has molasses, wood, alcohol soaked plums, sherry notes. Flavor has sweetness, wood, sherry all over, vanilla, plums. Long sweet finish. My wife would love this. Ok with me in small doses though. Sweet, but nothing to do with saison.

(Keg at Brewdog Helsinki, 20151114) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had vanilla, wood and burnt malts. Palate was full bodied and drying with medium carbonation. Flavours were vanilla, wood, burnt malts, rum, ash and bitterness. Afteraste had saltiness, wood and bitterness. A beer lacking all that beer usually has. A third pint was too much.

Tap at Brewdog Helsinki, Helsinki. Colour is black with very small white head. Aromas and flavours: Fruits, dryness, wood, dry fruits, plums, berries, blackcurrants, mint, warming alcohol and malts. OK, this is really complex. Lingering which is always good.

On tap at BrewDog Brighton. Mint and rum aroma. Mint in the mouth. More rum. Blackcurrant. Doesn’t taste of 13%. Bit too minty but malty to finish. Coconut. Too much mint. Complex
