Bottle received in trade. Thank you rfraga7! 2012 vintage. Pours oily pitch black with a rather big frothy and creamy dark chocolate brown head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty, earthy and tiny fruity with heavily roasted malts, salty liquorice candy, burnt wood, burnt raisins, black currants, blackberries, caramel, soil, oatmeal cookies, resin, pine needles, alcohol, liquorice, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee and grapefruit rinds. Taste is slightly sweet, heavy bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, bitter chocolate, burnt wood, burnt caramel, blackberries, bilberries, burnt caramel, raisins, prunes, resin, salty liquorice candy, grapefruit rinds and dark roast coffee. Mouthfeel is soft, creamy, tiny roasted astringent, tiny boozy and full bodied. Finish is bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, burnt caramel, burnt wood, bilberries, blackberries, oatmeal cookies, salty liquorice candy, soil and alcohol. Very nice smooth and heavy imperial stout…

Bottle, 2012 vintage 9.25% ABV. Aroma is full of rich dark chocolate, light roast and quite a bit of dark fruit. Cherry, plum and prune are most noticeable. Light tobacco and leather character. Pours black with a moderately small, thick, dark mocha head the recedes somewhat quickly to the edges. Flavor has a sweet, rich dark chocolate character. Medium roast with a bit of ash. Moderate leather and tobacco notes. Quite a bit of cherry, berry and plum fruit character. Some lingering leather, roast and chocolate. Medium bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. A touch of astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a fairly good stout, especially if you like ones with a leather character. Nice balance of fruit to even out the leather and ash. Good complexity in the chocolate character. Not much hops which I suppose isn’t surprising considering its from 2012.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of creamy medium-dark chocolate notes with light floral coffee notes with some roasted malt notes but limited bitterness. Taste is quite spectacular with great creamy medium-dark chocolate notes with some floral dry coffee notes, some lactose notes and some medium dry bitter roasted malt to finish. Body is full with luscious creamy texture with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Quite a balanced experience with loads of flavours while retaining some good amount of drinkability.

Thanks to my sister for snagging me one of these as the 2005/2006 release of this beer I traded away my only bottle. So glad to finally get to try it. The 12oz bottle pours with deep darkness and supporting a mocha colored head. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, black strap molasses, dark chocolate and a bit of booze at the end of the draw. The taste is similar with black strap molasses, dark roasted malts, some burnt malts and brown sugar sweetened pine hops. The roasty to burnt goodness is hitting the spot right now. Man, I have been waiting a real long time for this. It was well worth the wait. This is dynamite.

12 oz. bottle, pours a silky black as night with a miniscule brown head. Aroma is full of dark roasted malt, significant molasses, moderate espresso and a touch of liqueur. Flavour is extremely woody and roasted predominantly - with very dry wood (not the barrel aged type), dry roasted malts, and a touch of espresso - none of the aforementioned chocolate or liqueur - with a woody and quite hoppy, bitter, dry finish. Silky smooth palate, with an element of harshness from the hops. No detection of the high ABV at all. Excellent stuff here.
