Lichtbitter, fruitig en continu gehopt met Amerikaanse hoppen. Een heerlijke doordrinker voor de zonnige dagen of als dorstlesser na noeste arbeid op ’t land.

Bottle from het Biermoment, dated 25-07-2015 BB 2 yrs after, large sample. Hazy golden color, big rocky head. Aroma is spicy, peppery, grassy hop, bit coriander, some mashed apples. Soft to medium bitterness, dry, cardamom, spicy, hint of citrussy tartness. Not bad.

Another ’new generation saison’, this time from one of the countless new craft breweries and interesting beer projects in the Netherlands. Quite strong gusher. Thickly ’papery’ lacing, off-white, dense head breaking here and there but otherwise retaining well, over a misty light orange golden beer, looks very ’sunny’. Not very strong but nevertheless pleasant aroma of orange zest, unripe peach, damp hay, blood orange, acacia honey, apple cake, white pepper, dried flowers, gooseberry, watermelon, red apple peel. Crisp, fruity onset, redcurrant and unripe stonefruit sourishness, subdued sweetishness, sparkling carbo as expected from the style, minerally, ’clear’ feeling based on a light bready malt base with subtle caramelly features, supporting a firm, drying hop character, firmly but gently bittering, appetizing and quenching as the saison paradigm prescribes, floral, a bit peppery and pink grapefruit-like retronasally. Only a thin trace of the bready malt sweetness peeps through and alcohol remains very much in the background to the point that I would never have estimated this to be 7% ABV. I have watched a lot of new saisons go by lately, Belgian, Dutch, Scandinavian or American, and most are perfectly decent, but miss the essence of this hard-to-define beer style; this one, however, does give me that crisp, drying, quenching, ’rural’ saison feeling. Well-balanced and nice example of the style.

On tap at Jopen Proeflokaal Waarderpolder. Hazy golden orange colour, no head. Aroma is sweet, malty, spicy and estery saison yeast. Flavour is likewise, quite spicy, sweet, fruity, light citrus, firm bitter finish, herbal bitterness underneath. Medium bodied, totally flat. With this yeast, it just tastes like a Belgian blond ale instead of a floral, dry saison. Love the Slayer reference though.
