Golden Cap Saison is a modern interpretation of a traditional farmhouse ale. A soft, pale beer, Golden Cap embodies the flavors and aromas of summer fields. Brewed with an ancestor of wheat called spelt, its straw-colored body, lively carbonation and a unique fermentation profile evoke fresh cut hay and cracked peppercorn.

Note from June 2010 Random bottle from the mini-fridge of plenty. No idea on age, but the label still looks sound. Flying monkeys/golden cap(hat), Wizard of Oz theme. I like it. :D A slow gusher. Poured into my Rare Vos tumbler that I have grown quite fond of recently. A hazy, lemon TheraFlu-colored body. A couple inches of cake-y, whitewash head that recedes pretty quickly. I did pretty well keeping all the floaties in the bottle this time, so a minute later, it settles out enough to grant itself another .5 in appearance. Smell is big upfront with yeast & pepper. Doughy, with a soapy, lemon scent that's just a bit too much. Play-Doh & rubbing alcohol on the backend. Taste is a quick, sharp hit of tin & malt, then major coriander & spent chewing gum. Toasty. End trails off with bitter spinach, a little salt, & a lot of yeast. Not in the right proportions. Carbonation is right in the middle. Body is a little dusty & pretty thin. Refreshing. It's not great, but it comes in a six pack. :P

(bottle) hazy pale amber, small white head; aroma of spice, wheat, floral; balanced flavour with long light bitter finish; very much like belgian white rather than saison

12 ounce bottle into tulip. Pours hazy and cloudy golden amber color with a nice fairly dense 2-3 fingers of white head with great retention that reduces to a ring of lacing. Some nice lacing sticks to the glass as well. Aromas of big tart apple, grape, grass, funk, pepper. and spices. Nice strong and complex aromas! Taste of big breadiness, pepper, and spices; with a bit of apple, funk, and grape in the background. Lingering notes of big breadiness and spices on the finish that last for a bit. Taste is not as good as the aromas lead me to believe. Medium bodied with medium-high carbonation. Nice smooth drinkability with no alcohol in the taste or finish. Overall, this is a pretty nice saison. A little more bready than I was expecting from the aromas.

RFD, DC tap ($6.50): Pours a golden color with a white head. Aroma of light fruitiness and a little bit of spice. I had this right after the Sierra Nevada Ovila and this on seemed to be to be a downgrade, but the differences were clear. While the SN was rather sweet, this lacked almost any sweetness and instead had a sort of dry spicy feel to it, which might make it be a slightly more authentic saison. The very mild hops do a good job in this beer. The body was also on the very light side without really being watery. Good, but, by no means great.

Pours ugly, a nice color and all, but without the head required for an attractive Saison. Smells right-on, though, sweet and wheaty with spicy cloves and a yeast tang. Tastes like a decent American Hefe mixed with a solid German one, with a little apple cider mixed in for good measure. Wheat-n-clove through-and-through rolls into a malted green apple finish with the slightest of alcohol kick. Sparkly feel but bearable, fairly easy to put back a couple bottles, especially when your father-in-law is buying. (5/19/09)
