A collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co and the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, Ovila Abbey Saison brings the centuries-old monastery brewing tradition to America.
Ovila Abbey Saison is complex and contemplative-but also refreshingly dry and drinkable. With earthy and spicy aromas, this rustic Saison has note of green grass and a faint citrus tang. The body is light and layered with fruit and spice accents and a dry, peppery finish.
A portion of the proceedsfrom this ale go toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Oliva chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery in 1931 and planned to use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s plan crumbled, these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Caged and corked 750mL pours crystal clear gold with copper core and slightly frothy near white head. The aroma is a little apple flavored cotton candy that slides into some yeasty saison spices and a touch of funky yeastiness. The taste is similar but seemingly brighter with sweet apples and pear fruity ester notes and then picking up saison yeasty spices as well as a bit of bubble gum and clove. Decent enough.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Buy Rite, 10/16/12
Aroma: The nose is full of sweet Belgian yeast, with a good amount of spice, floral notes, and fruity notes
Appearance: It pours a lightly hazy orange color with a creamy, long lasting white head and medium lace
Flavor: The taste is well-balanced with a nice flow between the light sweetness, light spice, and mild bitterness
Palate: This one is medium bodied, it is fairly smooth feel, it works nicely on the mouth, and a has a clean finish
Overall Impression: Overall, I felt like this one was really just a solid example of the style. It really didn't miss at all, all the aspects worked, and it was just a very very solid Saison overall. However, I still felt like something was lacking, it felt a little one-speed/one-note, and really, it just isn't a complete hit.

A hazed golden ale with a thick frothy off white head. In aroma, a nice smooth fruity malt with orange peels, coriander, classic. In mouth, a nice smooth sweet and fruity malt with nice curacao and berry notes. Tasted with GRM, Probstblueribbon and Ian, July 20 2012.

750ml bottle my buddy Tom picked up @ Bert’s Better Beers for $12.65. Nice hazy, unfiltered gold with plenty of retention. Cork popped like a champagne bottle. Plenty of Co2 in this one. Nose is mostly a generic fruit aroma. Carbonation gives a lively tingle on the tongue. Taste of a fruity blend, hints of citrus, balanced with a Belgian spice. Lighter in body. Dry finish. Alcohol is well hidden. A good brew that is drinkable and tasty. Nothing to rave about but… still a nice Saison.

Bottle: Light golden pour with a large, fluffy white head. Nose is earthy, lightly grassey, just a little bit of lemon, and spices. Very approachable flavor is earthy, grassey, yeast, and bready malt. A little more of the citrus/lemon from the aroma.

Picked this up at the local Co-Op. I’ve heard mixed reviews. Put it in the fridge for a few days and poured into an Ommegang glass.
A - 2-Finger crystal white head. Great creamy look with lacing. I’m drinking so many saisons lately that this "light gold" description is getting pretty old but that’s pretty much it. Light gold.
S - Lots of spicy peppers, grapefruit and tangerines.
T - Champagne yeast, lots of spice, funky and wild fermentation taste and honey and birch wood.
M - 20/80 carbonation on mouth swish. Dry finish.
O - Decent. I’s not a great Saison but it’s pretty good. I’m just spoiled by Hill Farmstead.

Tap at Hopleaf. Thick unfiltered orange tan. Big creamy white head. Awesome funky rich aroma. Sweet, funky sour, lots of depth. Sierra delivers the good on this one. Wow. Rich and very Belgian tasting, this is really quite nice. Peppery wheat bitterness, some lemon. Toasty malt tones. A nice balance between the two. Zesty, some tropical undertones. Lots of depth, comes together perfectly. World Class.

Hazy golden with a large and rocky white head. Aroma has a nice light sweetness, some yeasty spices, herbal notes, and light fruit. Flavor has noticeable but well-restrained yeast spicing, sweet fruity notes, a bit of sugary malt, and light grassy/herbal notes. Very enjoyable saison.
