On tap at Flying Saucer. Pours a clear orange gold with a small creamy white head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is a floral pine hop. Medium mouthfeel with a dry lemon and rubber. Not much going on with this one.

GABF 2011 - poured by Garett Oliver himself - too bad this beer is kind of fucked up and nasty - seriously strong flavors that clash with one another - ginger spice, honey sweetness, peaty/whiskeyish smoke - fairly sweet - a bit of a peppery finish - some odd minty quality in there - what the hell happened here?

More oddities from Brooklyn, this time another beer that wants to be a liquor drink. Second of these Brooklyn creations I’ve tried, and The Concoction is wildly more successful than The Manhattan Project, which tasted a whole lot like carbonated cherry Ny-Quil. The nose is super citrus, fitting with the amount of lemon that has been added to this brew, but with a honey sweetness and a malty depth that hints at Scotch. The taste takes a while to get used to, but not in a bad way-- it just takes a few swigs to get your bearings. The lemon and ginger are apparent immediately, with a mild sweetness that creeps in just before the hops "tonic"-up the finish. The Scotch flavors come from the modest smoky front and the dry, boozy fade, while the lemon peel and juice keeps the brew oddly refreshing, despite its heavy leanings. Weird, but definitely worth a pint or two, just to figure the sucker out. Personally, I’m kinda diggin’ it.

A pale golden ale with no head. In aroma, a mineral malt with mash tun, signs of oxidation. In mouth, a sweetish malt with mineral notes, surrenated spices, oxidized. On tap at Sunset Grill, Sept. 11 2011.

Bottle at Afterwords. Served as Brooklyn Brewer’s Reserve, an alias that apparently neither the RB admins (who made me delete my original rating) nor the Brooklyn Brewer were aware of. Glad I ran into one of the Afterwords staff at Paradiso, who explained all. Aroma of grass > pine > citrus. Taste is nice pine and sour citrus combo. Interesting.

Juniper berries, pine, and a somehwhat medicinal smell. hazy copper, thin yellow head. the flavor is dominated by chlorophenols, and still the juniper berries. Think chloroseptic and gin. It even numbs the back of the throat just like the throat spray. The weird thing is, I don’t think it is infected, but rather simulating an infection, whether intentional or not. Maybe that’s my imagination, but this beer is extremely odd, to say the least. I don’t see this beer being embraced by the geek community.

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear copper color with a thin creamy white head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma of lemongrass, ginger, other spices and faint caramel. The taste is big ginger and citrus notes and an earthy, fruity finish. Medium bodied.

Tap at Blue Smoke, NYC. Pours clear amber with a medium, white head. Bit of spice and citrus on the nose, hints of malts. Flavor is medium sweet but dominated by a menagerie of spices and unusual flavors. There is a bit of rindy citrus bitterness in here, along with subtle caramel and almost smokey malts. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Mild malt and sugar finish, some light bitterness but plenty of lingering spices. A bit too much going on in this one.

Location: Draft the the Brewery, 7/30/11

Aroma: The nose is all over the place, lots of spices, some malts, citrus, smoke, and whatever else
Appearance: The pour is amber in color with a medium beige head and some lace on the glass
Flavor: The taste is much like the nose, all over the place, sweet, spice, and light smoke
Palate: The body is medium, and overall, the mouthfeel is much less odd then the rest of the beer
Overall Impression: This beer was an alright attempt, but ultimately it was a bit of a mess. It isn't terrible, but it has a lot going on, and all those different components don't really mesh as well as they could. Maybe back to the drawing board here? I mean this one could use a lot of rounding before it would really be a quality brew.

Sampled on tap at St. Augustine's, pours hazy golden orange with a small beige head. Aroma of butterscotch, Belgian spices, ginger and wheat. Given that the restaurant labeled this a scotch ale, the flavour was extremely surprising - very odd spices (oregano?), ginger and some sort of medicinal quality. Not enjoyable at all - very weird flavours.
