Pours dark amber with a thick frothy cream head. Aroma of heavy malt. Taste has more heavy malt notes, some off putting elements typical of the style. Palate was much of the same. Eh.

Clear amber pour, big off white head. Toasted malts, toasted caramel, light pine hops, even an odd vinous aroma. Viscous mouthfeel, low carb. Soapy, resinous pine finish. Medium bitterness, alcohol is well hidden, a nice sipper.

19.2oz stovepipe can from the Burlington Co-op. Dark amber pour with a light airy head. Aroma is malty, notes of caramel, light hops. Taste is malty and sweet, leathery. Doesn't finish well.

From Sept 2008

I got this bottle in a trade with VermontHiker. Thanks Tom!

This pours a hazy deep amber with a solid 1" layer of foam.

The smell on first whiff is strong bready/caramel malt sweetness followed by slight notes of pine. Good nose.

The taste follows the nose except the bread and caramel malt aren't as dominant as the hops move in with some citrus and some pine and a big fruitiness appears with some dark cherry goodness and other dark fruit that give it a slight but enjoyable tartness. Now I'm tasting some toffee and a woody character. Dang, the more I sip and the warmer it gets, the more flavours I'm tasting. Very complex and very enjoyable.

Many further sips in and I find the hop presence more assertive..well, it does say on the label that it's rated at 100 IBUs, but the bitterness *never* gets out of control here. I think the balance is nice and could be further improved with some aging but as is, this is a fine drinking BWSA and the alcohol doesn't hurt the drinkability much at all.

The mouthfeel, for me, seems a little too light for the style but the lightish carbonation helps to pull that off so I can't complain much. Btw, head retention is very good and it has some good lacing.

Bottom line: This is a very tasty and thoroughly enjoyable example of the style. A bottle of this in the dead of Winter would be sure to brighten up just about *anyone's* day.

Tap, at the brewery. Amber colour. Lightly hazy. Thin, off white head. Resinous nose. Caramel. Some citric fruitiness. Hint of flora. Taste is rich sweet. Light bitterness. Full body. Soft fizz. Finishes fruity, sweet, rich bitter. I thought this was a big IPA, until I saw the deScription. I don’t think I was far wrong, mind you. Tasty gear.

Bottle at Jack and Leighton’s Birthday Beeorama, one gathering dust in my stash, 13/04/13. Hazed dark chestnut brown with a thin light tan head. Nose is dark toffee fudge, dark fruits, grain, demerara sugar, syrup. Taste comprises dark malt, brown sugars, dark toffee, touch of booze. Full bodied with moderate carbonation, the finish carries a good kick’o’booze! Overall - drinkable but not a class act and glad to have split this with more than a few others. The alcohol was a bit too obvious in this one!

Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell, London during the Birthday Celebration of Jack & Leighton - thanks to Colin for this biggie. Pours clearish amber with a fine, tan cream head. Nose of sweet bread, toffee, rubbing alcohol and leaves. Big sweet flavor with toasty bread, earth, leaves and dry toffee. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with sugary bread, mild earthy bitterness, leaves and caramel. Fair.
