Charkoota Rye is a Smoked Rye Dopplebock. An homage to all things Pig, including Porkapalooza and the age-old tradition of Charcuterie, Charkoota Rye’s malty backbone is derived from a blend of rye and four other malts,
including malted barley smoked over cherry wood. Its smoke-forward body is balanced with tones of deep mollasses and caramel, with a crisp, clean lager finish.

Courtesy of fishingnet. Pours ruby amber with almost no head. The aroma is smooth smoke moving into alderwood – like smoky notes and cherry sweetness. The taste is similar but struggles to navigate around plastic band-aid flavors. I do get sweet malts, smooth sweet ripe cherries and a smooth pleasing level of molasses covered charred smoky alderwood. I didn’t sense any influence of rye. Good stuff nonetheless.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Pours a deep brown body with an off-white head. Aroma of smoke, bacon and chocolate. Taste is bitter, bacon, smoke and slightly fruity. Not my thing (smoked beers in general). Bit of charcoal. 736313:3.2
Rerate: Bottle shared by someone at Oakquinox. Pours with a hazed deep brown body and a tan head. Aromas of smoke, bbq, leather, rye, peaty, dirty, earth, fig and raisins. Flavors of raisins, sweet, bbq, rye, crisp. Lightly rancid. Lively bubbles with a dry mouthfeel. Same numbers.

Bomber. Deep brown body with ruby highlights. Moderate, off-white head, mostly diminishing. Strong wood smoke aroma with notes of peat, earthiness, caramel, molasses and toffee. The flavor is moderatey sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly bitter with the sweetness hanging around a long time. Medium body, watery texture and moderate carbonation. The upfront smokiness cuts the initial sweetness of the beer, but the molasses and caramel overtake it in the finish. In fact, the lingering sweetness begins tasting like sacharin after 8 ounces or so. Charkoota makes a good first impression, but you start finding fault with it the longer you know it, the major one being it is just too sweet.

Bomber from Archer Liquors. Pours a dark ruby brown with a slight beige head. Aroma is very smokey. Medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor is smoky. Not exactly bacon, but close enough. Smoke tingles the tongue. Not all that much other than smoke. Slightly malty finish. Some treacle. Quite an experience.

11th October 2008. GABF. Clear dark brown beer. Starts off quite creamy malty but then the smoke hits. Okay but need a few mouthfulls to get used to the smoke.

courtesy of kiefdog. pours reddish, off-white head. aroma & flavor, lots of smoked malts, rye adds a nice dimension, full mouthfeel, grainy, spiced and roasted malts. Not the most impressive wood flavor, but definitely an outstanding doppelbock.

On tap at the Institute in Philly. Pours a transparent mahogany brown with zero head. Personally, this smells like trash. Smoke, spice, tea leaves, garbage. Taste is woody, more tea leaves, smoke, the liquid at the bottom of a trash can. Finish is chalky with some smokiness. Can’t stand smoked beers and this was a waste of good rye.

Bottle. Deep red-brown body, thin dissipating ring of buff-colored carbonation. Smoky, meaty, leathery nose, not too strong to prevent the sweet grains from being noticed. Smoke flavors melt into sweet caramel and grain, berries, and toffee. Smoke and leather linger in the finish. A half bottle is plenty.
