The name CascaZilla is a play on both the name of our local Cascadilla Gorge and the monster amounts of Cascade hops in this beer. This red ale gets its distinctive color from a healthy portion of caramel malt, which also lends some body and sweetness to the beer. The predominant flavor and aromoa of this beer, however, is brought to you by the fresh American hops. If you haven’t done so yet, treat yourself to Ithaca Beer’s new monstrously hoppy Red Ale.

Draft @ Yard House, Dedham, MA. Served in a pint. Not much in the way of head or lace. Color was dirty amber. Nose of Earthy/ pine like hops and noticeable caramel malt. Creamy mouthfeel with malt, pine hops and fruit flavors. Nothing here going to blow you away however, it is nicely balanced and I never would have guessed that it was 7 percent. Real drinkable.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of citrus and hoppy bitter notes is quite pleasant. Taste is a nice mix between some citrus and bitter hops with a solid dry caramel malt with limited sweetness and light resinous notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Easily drinkable and a bit more complex then a plain bitter attack on the palate.

Pours a deep ruby brown color with a thinnish beige head that dissipates to form a ring on top. Smell is nicely balanced between malt and hop. Grapefruit and citrus meet caramel and brown sugar. A tried and true combination because it works so well. Taste is malty with darker sugar and caramel jumbled together with citrus and grapefruit. Slight mineral water type bite midway through with a long lingering citrus bitterness. Moderate level of carbonation and a medium body. Seven percent abv is nowhere to be found. Great brew, I’m glad I picked up six.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of jleblanc. Pours a clear amber with a dense off-white head. Sweet caramel in the nose with some citrusy hops. Medium body, dry caramel notes and again citrusy hops. There’s a medicinal, herbal touch. Ends dry but not overly bitter. 150311
