We’ve been hard at work on a recipe that includes – you guessed it – seven different grains. Let’s see if I can name them all: barley, wheat, rice, oats, corn, rye and...spelt. Yep, I think that’s it. The result is a perfect summer beer. It’s about 5% ABV and displays a nice fruity yeast character that finishes dry and slightly hoppy. It’s seven kinds of wonderful!

7 Grain Saison was a year round offering from The Bruery for a few of our early years. This farmhouse ale was brewed with barley, wheat, rye, oats, rice, corn and spelt! Lightly hoppy and light bodied. A lovely year round farmhouse, traditional to what Belgian farmhands would once have enjoyed in the summer out in the fields.

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy straw yellow color with a medium sized creamy white head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of grainy notes, bready, spicy notes, caramel and a nutty note. The taste is caramel, bready notes, nutty notes and a yeasty finish. Strong carbonation. Medium bodied.

Tap at Paradiso Dupont. Cloudy yellow, small white head, scant lacing. Aroma of hay. Taste has lots of lemon, oily with a very bitter finish, too bitter for a saison. Very light body. This one misses the mark.

A hazed blonde saison with a thin white head. In aroma, a nice lemony saison with light cloven notes. In mouth, a nice smooth saison, with fruity notes, light orange pulp, oily mouthfeel, quite classy and smooth. On tap at ChurchKey DC, Sept. 18 2010.

GABF 2010 - I wanted to like this so bad, especially since it was nice and dry, a character that I really love in a saison - sadly, this one suffers from just too many damn ingredients and a poor hop profile - the grains quickly start to muddy things up - the bitterness is crisp at first, but then becomes increasingly too prominent, and eventually becomes soapy in the finish - lean malts and a flinty character are nice, but the other elements become unpleasant after a while.

Very good light saison. I’m a big fan of lower abv saisons, and this is a very nice example. The beer pours a yellow gold with a big white head. The aroma is mostly bright, clean malt with some vegetal and earthy notes. It’s fairly mild, but that’s no surprise in a saison of this size. The taste has a great grain flavor. All of the different grain notes blend nicely together to a pleasant, refreshing beer. It’s mildly sweet for a saison. The light yet creamy mouthfeel is the most striking aspect of the beer. It’s full and lush, particularly for the abv. Excellent beer.

On tap at the Bruery. Pours with a small white head over a hazy golden body. Aroma is grassy, tropical fruit, herbal, mango. Good hops, but according to Tyler, it is just whirlpool and bittering. Taste is fruity, dry, grainy and clean. Everything you could want from a non-farmyard-ey saison. Lively and dry bubbles. Very nice.

Sampled at Max’s in Baltimore. Pours a totally clear, bright yellow with a cloudy white head. Spicy, sugary aroma, herbs, flowers, a little perfumy soap. Flavor is sweet, a little chalky, light citrus, light bread. Finish is chalky.
