Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a nice looking straight up black color with a one finger off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. It left some nice light clingy lacing.
The smell had a nice blend of roasty to sweet malts coating some nice bittersweet citrusy hops.
The taste took those flavors and blended it fairly easy. There was a nice roasty and slightly citrusy aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation seemed to do its due diligence to allow a decent sharpness pounding my tongue into submission.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good black ale worthy of having again.

12oz bottle consumed a month and a half after the enjoy by date. Oops. Opaque brown-black body, thin off-white head laces the glass a little. Not much of an aroma, sweet brown malt, some earthy hops. Kind of comes across more as a India Brown Ale on the darker side, not really comparable to most Black IPAs. Sort of like a decently hopped, oily porter. Malty, sandy brown malt tones. OK, maybe.

Dark brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head and a bit of brown tints. Aroma of fresh hops with nice floral and earthy scents with a good roasted malt nose. Medium-bodied; Assertive hops up front with a slight pine and pineapple flavour all covered up by a good and nutty roasted malt flavour. Aftertaste shows a lot of bitterness both from the roasted malt and from the hops - a very nice blend and a good balance. Overall, a nice beer with a good balance and showing some pleasant hops with a good bite from the earthy malt. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Bottle Stop Liquor in Valdez, Alaska a few minutes ago on 24-May-2013 for US$2.95 sampled here in my hotel room in Valdez, Alaska on 24-May-2013.

Pours dark brown, ruby...with a very tall, light brown head. Aroma is pine, citrus,....hint of eucalyptus. Flavour is grapefruit peel and light coffee. Roasty and citric. Very nice.

Pour is a dark brown with a huge tan head. Aroma is a decent mix of hops and roasted malt. Flavor is much the same a nice hoppy backbone with a decent helping of roast malt. A nice roast is left on the tounge after the swallow. This was quite decent from a brewer that makes so-so stuff.

Sample at the Seattle brewpub. Dark brown color with some amber around the edges and a medium light beige head that recedes slowly. Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of toasted malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of piney hops and sweet malt. The finish is malty up front with a short resiny hops aftertaste. Decent overall.

From the bottle, I was impressed by the way it looked in my tall beer glass; big black and a very nice head. Head is fading but it still looks pretty good. Smell is typical IPA-ish. Yes, as expected; big nasty ipa flavor on an olmost undescernable roasty background. Over the top and matches up with most run of the mill IPA. Bitter black nasty medicine this is, wew. Barely any co2 but what is detected is a little creamy. Call aristotle and meno and ask if the taste of this is just remembered knowledge or just learned. Does seem to be more than 7% so I guess its not hiding the alky well, but I ask: does any good IPA? Rototilling of the taste buds ensues.

12oz bottle pours clear brown with dark copper hues and weak short lived dark tan head. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, some chocolate malts and then a good dose of pine hops rolling into faint earthy black tea. The taste is awfully similar with very dark roasted malts, dry chocolate malts, a decent level of pine hops and then slight levels of earthy black tea and a dash of citrus. This is thin in body but offers up a more sessionable option for the style if that is what one is after.

12 oz bottle from a six pack bought at Grocery Outlet. I had to rate a dark IPA right after the white IPA I just drank. Aroma is pretty standard black IPA, dark roasty malts juxtaposed with citrusy hops; coffee, bread, grapefruit are accounted for. This one seems to lean a little more towards the dark roasty malt character than hoppy IPA. Pours dark dark brown to black with reddish tints; has a collapsing beige head. As in the aroma, the taste leans more toward a porter flavor than IPA, which I have no problem with. Has a nice roasted coffee flavor profile. Starts sweet and finishes with a lingering bitterness. Carbonation is average and the body is a little on the thin side. I’m pleasantly surprised by this beer. It really caught me off guard. I’ve been let down by Pyramid a lot during the last 5-8 years or so. They seem to have been having an identity crisis during that time. Their packaging changes moreso than any other brewery I can think of. Most of their portfolio is extremely boring. This is the best beer to come from them in a long time I think.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium sized frothy brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of chocolate malts with herbal and citrus hops. The taste is bitter roasted malts, chocolate, herbal hops, some nuttiness. Medium bodied.
