You are holding the inaugural release in a multi-year brewing experiment-to brew a series of beers as diverse as the great state of New Jersey.

Our theme is the state-long artery that connects us. Each beer will focus on the unique aspect of an individual exit, whether an ingredient or event. The journey begins at Exit 4- right up the street from the Flying Fish brewery.

As one of the first craft brewers to embrace Belgian-style beers, we’ve chosen to start with a Belgian trippel, finished with plenty of American hops.

Note the hazy golden hue and the aroma of citrus with hints of banana and clove. Then taste the Belgian malt flavors and a subdued bitterness in the finish. Bottle conditioned, this beer will develop as it ages. Enjoy.

Malts: Malto Franco-Belge Pils Malt, Weyerman Acidulated, White Wheat, Demerara Sugar

Hops: Simcoe, Columbus, Palisades, Amarillo

Yeast: Belgian Abbey

Original Gravity: 21.5 Plato

Purchased in a single at Total Wine on my trip to Vegas. Pours a slightly dirty (tiny particles) golden colour with a small amber hue. Nice creamy off-white head that stays long and gives chunky lacing. The aroma is busting with hop, fresh cascade maybe, making this one very American and not Belgium. Decent mouthfeel that is smooth, kind of creamy. Alcohol is very well-hidden as no burning is felt. The hop is much milder in the taste, well blended with the sweet malt. Notes of peaches and honey in the aftertaste. Reminds me more of a Imperial IPA than a Tripel (because of the amount of hop and not being cloudy).

Apricot nose, quite weak, some lemongrass notes, maybe sage. Cloudy amber, full of sediment, thin head. Classic peach and apricot flavor, funk, candi sugar. Weak lemongrass finish. True to style and nicely balanced. Alcohol very well concealed, which gets bonus points from me.

A blonde triple with a thin white head. In aroma, a very fruity banana esters, orange pulp. sweat, and talc powder. In mouth, a sweet malt, on the verge of cloying, honey notes, bittering hops, coriander and orange peels. Interesting. Bottle at Mondial 2011, June 11 2011.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Plovmand. Pours a cloudy pale golden with a tiny white head. Sweet and perfumy hop aroma. Medium body, a little low in carbonation, very fruity and slightly yeasty, sweet indeed. Dry and bitter citrusy finish. More like a Belgian style IPA really. 270411

Bottle from Oak Tree. Pours range gold with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is nearly perfumey citrus. Med body. Flavor is so citrusy it’s almost sour. Herbal note suffuses through out. So does a yeastiness.

12oz bottle. Hazy orange-tan, thin soapy head. Dry, minty, astringent hop aroma, some sugary Belgian yeast tones. Could have benefited from more luscious carbonation, as it is it’s a little watery. The flavors, however, are quite nice and balanced. Noble hopping really gives it an authentic Belgian taste, which balances out the thick malt and yeast tones. A pretty respectable Tripel.

Bottle thanks to Dak. Pours a near clear gold with a slight orange hue and a white head that starts and remains at the edges. Aroma has notes of citrus with underlying fruits, sweet grains and a bit of a floral note. Flavor begins with sweet grains and fruits but has a growing citrus note that rounds out the beer nicely.
