Unanimous choice of five tasters at the brewpub for best beer of a very disappointing session. This one made the effort worthwhile.

Draught @ the brewpub. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a sweetish malty dark fruit and caramel aroma. Sweetish malty bitter dark fruit flavor wit some hints of caramel. Sweetish malty fruity finish with a bitter aftertaste.

On tap @ the brewpub. Pours clear deep garnet with light tan head and nice lacing. The aroma is a bit on the light side with notes of caramel, earthiness, a light amount of peat and dark fruity esters. The taste is very pleasing with an earthy to near peaty sensation followed by a hint of caramel candy and mild roasty malts. By midway notes of prunes, dates and ripe cherries become loud enough to be heard as the finish approaches. It ends leaning in the direction of dry.

Bottle. Poured mahogany with a thin off-white head. Aroma of molasses and malt. Light body, not as full as other Scotch ales. Thin fast disappearing finish.

Dark amber-brown. No particular head. Chewy, rich earthy malt aroma with toffee notes and burnt cherry accents. A little late alcohol. Sweet, complex profile. A rich blend of milk chocolate, burnt toffee, rum-soaked fruitcake. Long, chewy finish. Follows in Haleβs tradition of approachable beers that just happen to be really good.

Bottle: Nice brown color with reddish tones and a smaller off-white head. Aroma is mostly malt, with some sweet fruitiness peeking through. Taste is a a deep malt with strong ale tones, fruitiness, and a rich earthiness. Nice clean, warming finish was just right after hanging the last of the Xmas lights.

Deep red body, medium to thin creamy light buff head. Caramely aroma with dark fruits, toast, and earthy hops. Dark fruits (cherries, grape), brown sugar, and caramels create a sweet, malty experience punctuated by earthy hops and a lingering bitter finish. Just the right amount of warming alcohol to linger on the tongue after the sip. Rich and well-made. Thanks Andrew (acertain) for the bottle.

Clear dark amber/brown coloured body with a super-thin tan head. Aroma of pit fruit, light malt, caramel and some alcohol. Light-to-Medium-bodied; Mild malty flavour with alcohol and spices showing-no strong backbone though! Aftertaste bland with little else-not great. Overall, not good-too watery and too bland! I sampled this 12 ounce bottle purchased at Normβs in Vienna, Virginia on 13-July-2004.
