A Loerik is a blend of Lambics intented to be Gueuze.
However, for some reason, the beer takes more than it's time to end his fermentation.
When we make a Gueuze blend the beer needs months before it is ready for sale.
For the Loerik, the fermentation is going so slowly that years are
necessary to obtain the same result.
We can't explain why and, naturally, we can't produce intentionaly such a beer. A Loerik is always the result of a coincidence with a beautiful result at the end!

I can almost copy the rating of mesandsim actually. I met Jacob already the week before in Olbaren and we shared some nice bottles over there. But I wasnβt introduced to his private beer cellar yet. It seems that this βboganβ (why a bogan? although he wears metal bands- or (bad) beer t-shirts, he IS (trying to get) educated :P) has still got like 30 bottles of the retired Belle Vue Selection Lambic in his cellar. Anyways, he was happy to share some more beers in Plan B. And ofcourse I donβt want to be impolite turning such offers down ;). Hazy orange color, short head. Aroma of tart gueuze, horseblanket, oak wood. Sour tart taste, bit sweet, oak wood again. Good gueuze! Satan bless these friendly Danes!

A nice treat, one of the most sour beers Iβve had, although definitely not the most sour. Still, among those really sour beers, I like this one almost the most. Fiberglass (new boat) and madeira aromas. Sour bread dough. Whew, this one is sour. Cherry pits (not a kriek though), peach cobbler, fresh nectarine. Cloudy gold, small to no head. 1998 bottle.

Bottle, at Plan B, Copenhagen. Cloudy golden colour. Funky and sour aroma and flavour, feels quite strong. Some hops too (more than in other gueuzes, anyway).

Bright, hazy orange. Earthy, sour nose. Mellow, almost "sweet" for Cantillon. Fruity, juicy, excellent lambic. Nothing wrong with a lambic which went wrong :)

1996 bottle generously opened by Will Shelton, 2/25/05. The cork all but disintegrated and we ended up having to punch much of it down in to the beer, but it broke cleanly and there were no cork pieces left floating.
To be honest, I found this to be pretty on par with what I would expect from an aged bottle of Cantillon Gueuze. Sourness toned down, with a lower amount of carbonation (though the Loerik, of course, had much less than I would have expected) and a mellow yeastiness with light acidity. Aroma is mild and lightly brett-like, with dusty, old yeast and mild horse blanket. Some lightly sweet malt is still apparent in the aroma as well. Flavor begins with light citrus and plenty of funky, lightly cheesy yeast. Departs from a younger Cantillon Gueuze with less bold, sharp tones, but it also had a distinct flavor that I could best describe as juicy apples and woodiness. It was highly pleasant and brought forth visions of an ancient apple orchard. Finish dosent quit or water down, and there is a delicious, lip-smacking malt and woodiness with that wonderful aged, mellow yeastiness. Appearance wise, it was a lightly rusty orange-golden, with a small white head that rapidly recedes to a small ring of bubbles and then nothing.

Bottled (1998). Hazy deep golden. Citric nose. Nearly flat, but still with pleasant light, sparkling mouthfeel. Juicuy and concentrated. Barnyrady and woody. Soft and dense malt character. What a brilliant mistake this beer is!

[A special treat from Jean-Pierre van Roy at the open brewing day March 6th 2004 - thanks a million] The color is an unclear orange with a white head. The aroma is sour, dusty, and woody. The flavor is very sour with strong notes of grapefruit, lemon, wood, and dust. I believe this is the best Gueuze I have tried.

For a gueuze that didn't carbonate, it was pretty effervescent. Cloudy tan colour. Deep, sweaty notes, fresh manure (hey, I roll my windows DOWN when I drive out to the farms), old wood. Long, sour Cantillon signature. Enjoyably cheesy, good depth and some cobweb. Smooth and more approachable than the above description would indicate.
