Bottled at RBESG. Dark brown. Flowery nose. Sweet and caramelly. Roasty with some honey and fruit, near full body and oily mouthfeel. Tarry finish. Warming.

A red-brown beer with a disappearing off-white head. The aroma is sweet and slightly roasted. The flavor is sweet malty and roasted, but also with some notes of alcohol. Thanks Stephen (tiggmtl) for bringing this to RBESG, since I couldn’t find it when I was in Montreal.

(Bottle 34,1 cl) Clear chestnut brown with a light brown head. Nose full of lovely roasted malt. Sweetish body yet with rather dry, roasted notes and a marked finishing bitterness for balance. And indeed this is a balanced and harmonious brew. 120805

Very, very dark chestnut color. Off white head. Whisky, peat, malt, molasses in the nose. Strong, peaty, whisky like rich mouth. Big warming malty sweet caramel, peaty whisky finish.

Bottle: Poured a dark color ale with a huge foamy dark head with slightly better then average retention. Aroma of strong roasted malt with some lingering sweetness. Taste has a strong toffee taste bordering on molasses, which is more or less interesting. Body is about average with a slight alcohol burn at the end. Good but nothing to really write home about.

2005 bottle from the generous MartinT, shared with OldGrowth on 5/28/2005. Clear, magenta tinged amber body. Moderate white head slowly recedes to a ring. Thick toffee in the nose, rich maple syrup, some alcohol detracts. Flavor has more toffee, and more alcohol. Anise on the finish. Plant roots or something that gives a earthy/floral mix. Some light yeast notes on the finish, but then a big burn lingers. As it warms and breathes, the alcohol really comes forth and ruins the experience for me. At 9.5 abv, I really think this one needs a lot more body, and could handle some hop flavor to take the edge of the alcohol burn. Medium to medium-full body, moderate carbonation. Dusty, dry mouthfeel.

Red-brown to accajou colour; little yellowish rim as head. Grapes; rather serious American hops for a Scotch Ale; sweet-bitter nose, lots of caramel, and roasted notes. Fiery roasted caramel flavour; getting more and more toffee-like, but in the end handing over to the hops, ending metallic-bitter. Well-bodied, some alcoholburn. Quite good beer even with slight unbalance, but nothing really outstanding. And definitely a tad too much alcohol for this style - and even more so if I look at this picture!! Thanks to Lubière.

Burgundy-amber colour. Strong alcohol aroma. Flavour is also quite hot, slight smokey with toffeeish, caramelly malts.
