Amazingly this is the first Sam Smiths beer I’ve rated – despite having been drinking their beers since 1978. Thankfully, notebooks & pencils aren’t yet banned in their pubs ! On tap at Boars Head, Stockport. Pours a hazy copper with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing, plus low carbonation. Not much of an aroma – just some vague hints of apples. In the mouth the apples are much stronger along with general fruitiness and traces of summer fruits, malts and chestnuts. Finish is slightly sweet. This is quite nice – plenty of taste for its strength. It certainly doesn’t taste like a watered down version of their bitter !

Tap. Brown Bear, Sheffield. 67p a half! That must some kind of record? Pale amber. Thick, super dense, off white head. Nose has pale grain. Some spun sugar. Not a deal else. Taste is fairly bitter, with some watery sweetness. Light body. Light bitter finish.

On tap at a Sam Smith's pub in York 10/11/2017. Medium brown in colour, with a tight, off-white, head. A sweetish mild, with some brown sugar, touch of fruit and very gentle finish. Pleasant, easy drinking.

Glasshouse Stores, Sam Smiths. Keg. Clear amber beer, good cream colour head. Palate is light and mildly crisp. Clean smooth malts, light and mildly creamy. Mildly dried fruits before a light finish. Clean and drinkable.

On tap at the Swan and Cygnets in Durham. Appearance - light amber with a decent head. Nose - elusive but some biscuits and nuts under a thin layer of toffee. Taste - sweet nutty malt. Palate - light bodied with a creamy yet thin texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - very light but well balanced.
