Brian Stewart has travelled to Batemans Brewery, in Lincolnshire, to brew this beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. This hoppy beer is a light caramel colour, with marmalade-orange on the nose, a toffee character with hints of spice and plenty of tangy hop notes, leading to a gentle, yet crisp, bitterness. Hops used: Admiral, Challenger.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol, March 2015. Amber in colour, with a decent, off-white, head. Biscuity malts, some citrus fruit character and a decent, bitter, finish. Fine.

Sir John Oldcastle. Spoons. Cask. Bright clear gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and a little crisp. Nice condition. Smooth dry malts with mild dry cream. Bitterish dry fruits, trace of apple. Tangy orange and lemon. Light semi dry finish. Fresh with nice citrus. Not bad.

Cask at the Windlesora, Tourist Town, 17/03/15. Clear golden amber with an off white covering that dissipates to edgework over time. Nose is fruit rinds, twiggy, pale malt, straw, muted. Taste comprises light orange, hint of fruit cake, caramel, listless stuff - nothing much to see - where are the hops ? Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light bitterness. Weak and directionless - no thanks!

On cask at the Alexander Graham Bell. Appearance - golden with a proportionate head. Nose - elision but light herbs and lemon comes through. Taste - bigger. Big tangy orange and light malt background. Palate - medium bodied with a big tangy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Overall - yeah it grew in intensity.

Cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading. Amber with a thin white head. Quite spicy, a little biscuit, a little caramel, a lot of bland. Not a big fan of this one at all.

Cask at Moon Under Water. It pours clear amber with a quickly dissipating white head. The nose is sweet, oily, biscuit, grainy, cereal and honey. The taste is bitter, strong floral, quite a lot of astringency, alcohol, biscuit malt, cereal, pithy citrus, soap and toasty grass with a very dry finish. Medium body, low carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Quite harsh and astringent. Messy.
