Dirty Stop Out is our smoked oat stout that has all characteristics of a heavy night out – complex, dark, with hints of smokiness and perfume aromas. A blend of 9 malts matched up with a firmly hopped back bone make this a very self-assured stout.

Gravity Cask at the St Neots Booze on the Ouse Beer Festival, 2016. Dark, almost black, with a ring of off-white head. Plums, charcoal and liquorice in the scent. Very sweet fruity taste... the smoke only comes into its own in the subtle and masterful finish. The taste of a recently extinguished campfire at the end of a night of toasting marshmallows and ghost stories. What’s not to like?

Bottle 33 cl. Pours a clear brown with a burgundy streak and a dense, light brown head. Roast, vanilla and subtle smoke in the nose. Medium body, again sweet roast vanilla and an edge of peaty smoke. Just an edge and no more than this rater can deal with. Actually a very pleasantly composed Stout. And it really shouldn’t be listed as a Smoked. 240216

Bottle. Pours opaque black with medium brown head. Aroma is sweet licorice, malt syrup, mint, oatmeal, ammonium chloride and cough drops. Taste is light to medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Body is oily with fizzy carbonation. Finish is long and balanced bitter and sweet with notes of malt, licorice, cereal, caramel, oatmeal, mint, dried fruit and cough drops. Smooth and well balanced.

Black beer with a lightly smoked fruit aroma. Flavour is, unsurprisingly, smoky as well with malt and fruit kicking in too. I’m not always a huge fan of smoked ones but this is fairly mellow. Nice.

At Maakun’s. Shared bottle. Dark brown, black, little creamy ring. Licorice, roasted sweet malts. Oats. Bit cardboard/flat. Light sweet, light bitter. Body is medium. Not much smoke to taste for a ’smoked oat stout’.

Bottle shared at home. Almost black with bubbly light brown head. Ash, burnt toast, dry smoked/burnt wood, light coffee, licorice, quite some herbs and soft chalk towards the finish. Under medium bitter with very light sweetness. Medium bodied with over medium carbonation. Not really my thing.

33cl Bottle from Vonk. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of burnt liquorice, oats (always smells like vodka or cooked veggies to me), hard-roasted malts, hint of leather. Flavour is light sweet, dry, quite bitter, roasted malts, burnt liquorice, not much smoke, caramel, hint of leather, dry bitter finish. Light bodied. Not much going on here, expected way more.

Sehr rund, hohe Drinkability. Keine Schinkenbombe.
