Black Jacques is a twisted and complex beer that will try and thwart description at every turn.

A black saison, brewed with oats and wheat for a silky mouthfeel, spicy hops, and Carafa malt for colour, Black Jacques has been tucked away in oak barrels (previously used to age red wine) for 9 months.

On the nose there are endless and complex interactions between cola, chocolate, coffee, mint humbug, warming oak, and spice. The myriad flavours touch on treacle, ripe banana, espresso, brandy, and a clean herbal warmth, balanced against a red-wine influenced acicity. The body is smooth and lighter than you’d expect from this black beer.

Flaske 330ml fra Vinmonopolet, Tromsdalen. Drukket på Rundvannet 21 Mar 15. Kullsort. Høyt lysebrunt luftig skum som varer en stund. Søt plomme/sherryaroma. Oljeaktig munnfølelse. Smaken sammensatt. Mørk sjokolade. Lakris. Undertone av mørke druer. Syrlig bitter avslutning. Langvarig ettersmak.

Bottle 330ml @ Geokkjer
Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma has notes of malt, vanilla, oak, caramel, alcohol and vinous. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long vanilla, oak, caramel and alcohol finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle. A brown beer with a minimal sized tan head. Unclear. It’s rather alcoholic on the nose, with roasted malts, dark sugars, candy notes, a generic fruityness and some dried fruits. Vinous. It’s suprisingly thin on the palate, with alcohol wamth and a soft bitterness. It’s woody, vinous and sweet, with caramel, molasses and dried fruits. Lasting finish. A beer that goes in all directions and mess with my tastebuds. 150328

330ml bottle from Vinmonopolet Tromsdalen. The oily pour creates a low, tan-coloured head lasting on top of a jet black body. Inviting smell of oak, raisin and liquorice joined by a moderate punch of warming alcohol. Blended flavour character of oak, dark berries and roasted dark malts with tingling alcohol down the throat. Slow sipper, highly appreciated (Tromsø 19.03.2015).

Bottled. Pretty much black colour, with a small off-white head. Aroma is black currant, some dark berries, chocolate, mild ashes as well as some vanilla and mild resiny notes. Flavour is kind of earthy, resiny, mild tart wooden notes along with chocolate, some caramel malts as well as rather biscuity. Also the alcohol does give it a big kick.

Thanks to Kraddel. 330 ml. mainly drank by me since I quite liked & Kraddel disliked it. Black, little mocha bubbles. Huge red wine spirit nose, cheap coffee, tart red wine, sourness seems very natural & well integrated. Taste is fully harmonious blend of delicious tart red wine, coffee, sour berries, thick coffee, light chocolate syrup, black chocolate, rich body. Rich body, faint spirit feel. Really beautiful surprise from BrewDog, they might bat bellow average usual but once in a while they do hit a homerun.

Rusty tan head, small, over virtually black beer. Vinous, wine barrels, hints at Brett, mixed with burnt notes. Chocolate, red fruit. Very nice nose, deep and complex. Sourish stout - the classical acidity of a stout but reinforced by the vinous touches. Vinous, again, with roasted, bitter, vanilla and black chocolate facets. Again very complex, but the stoutish burnt notes sound as a dissonant, here. Yet, impressive; Medium to well-bodied, quite slick to oily; well-carbonated. Impressive, as said above. Give me another Jacques, my dear.
