Black Jacques is a twisted and complex beer that will try and thwart description at every turn.
A black saison, brewed with oats and wheat for a silky mouthfeel, spicy hops, and Carafa malt for colour, Black Jacques has been tucked away in oak barrels (previously used to age red wine) for 9 months.
On the nose there are endless and complex interactions between cola, chocolate, coffee, mint humbug, warming oak, and spice. The myriad flavours touch on treacle, ripe banana, espresso, brandy, and a clean herbal warmth, balanced against a red-wine influenced acicity. The body is smooth and lighter than you’d expect from this black beer.

Tap at CBC 2014. Beer in the glass deep black, nice head. Heavy malty aroma. Starts strong-malty, quite roasty, but not too intense. Light fruity notes of berries with salty hints. Finish milder, still some fruity notes. Nice!

Smell of vanilla, coffee, banana. Dark brown colour, dark brown head. Aroma of spices, vanilla. Also coffee, banana, alcohol and herbs. Lively but soft carbon, slightly oily texture. Starts off bitter but ends up sweet. Gets somewhat ashy with increased temperature. It’s a cacophony of flavours, but balances well.

Bottle at Beer Hunters. Opaque black color, small brownish head. Aroma is spicey - maybe cinnamon and clove, also roasted coffeish maltyness. Medium-bodied to full-bodied. Heavy roast, red wine with tannines. Alcohol in the finish, some spices. No saison at all but lots of dark Belgian character. Interesting although this combination is not the perfectly in the spot.

330 ml bottle at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki, courtesy of skullgeorge. Black color with a nice small creamy brown head. Aroma is roasted malty, light chocolate, wineous, spicy like mint. Taste is sweet and light bitter, light chocolate again, port wine, spicy. If it was less spicy it would be better (for me). Silky medium almost creamy body with soft carbonation.
