A black saison, brewed with oats and wheat for a silky mouthfeel, spicy hops, and Carafa malt for colour, Black Jacques has been tucked away in oak barrels (previously used to age red wine) for 9 months.
On the nose there are endless and complex interactions between cola, chocolate, coffee, mint humbug, warming oak, and spice. The myriad flavours touch on treacle, ripe banana, espresso, brandy, and a clean herbal warmth, balanced against a red-wine influenced acicity. The body is smooth and lighter than you’d expect from this black beer.

Thin brown collar on a dark brown body. Malt, chocolate & port aroma. Medium bodied, soft & smooth with a clean back. Chocolate, blueberry, peppery & zesty tastes. I like this one - aged well.

Bottle. Missus got this from Trembling Madness. Been looking at this in the fridge for years, literally. Nearly black. Fine, dense, lasting, tan head. Nose has liquorice. Bonfire toffee. Some dark fruit, particularly blackcurrant. Some sweet red wine. Some vanilla. Taste is rich and sweet, with a sticky, fruity tartness. Smooth mouthfeel. Fine carbonation. Drinks way under the ABV. Feels almost juicy. Tart and vinous finish. Great stuff.

330ml bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a tan head. Dark malts, chocolate, liquorice, vanilla, umami & red wine barrel. Pretty boozy. Still an interesting beer a few years on.

Well stored bottle. Black body with a small tan head. Aroma has malt, chocolate and coca nut. Rather sweet and boozy with dark malt, chocolate and cocoa nut. Balanced body and long-lasting aftertaste. Tasty but pretty one-dimensional.

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with slightly late awakening, small, thick, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, beige to tan head. Vinous, woody, fruity, dark malty aroma, notes of bramble, black currant, blue grapes, red wine, hints of morello, some oak and leather, treacle, weak, ephemeral coffee overtones, a yeasty spicy touch of marmite. Taste is slightly dry, woody, minimally tart, fruity, minimally sweet and minimally roasty dark malty, hints of treacle, morello, bramble, black currant, blue grapes, a touch of red wine, oak, marmite, dark chocolate; well hidden alcohol, lingering, dry, fruity finish. Very complex, well balanced, homogeneous.

At a tasting, many thanks, almost no head, very dark brown color, aroma of sourdough dark bread, pale raisins, soy and a spicy tingling, flavor of chocolate cake, dark bread, shrubs, some clove and nutmeg, charred and prune hint, light sweetness and sourness. Very tasty, exquisite.
