Another of the early recipes for Burton Bridge Brewery. This beer has been brewed since the early 1980's and remains as popular as ever. XL being the Roman numerals for 40 depicts the A.B.V of 4.0% as well as the play on words as this beer truly excels. Hops used are Challenger and Target with Target also being used as a late copper hop.

Loose off white head on an unclear caramel coloured body.
Toffee & spiced aroma.
Medium to thin, soft on the tongue with a dry clean back.
Malt, toffee, grain & light hop tastes with a bitter finish.
Old School.

(Cask at Craft Beer Co Covent Garden, London, 31 May 2025) Amber colour with frothy, tan head. Malty, nutty nose with caramel, chocolate and dark bread. Malty, nutty taste with notes of chocolate, caramel, dark bread and a mild earthy bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Well balanced bitter. Quite nice.

My first beer in the new front terrace seating at the Exchange Ale House in Bradford - only made possible by the complete pedestrianisation of the city centre in the last year. Who says councils don't come up with any good ideas? Traditional low bitterness bitter for my outdoor drinking experience, looks good, easy enough strength.

Cask at Roebuck Inn (JDW). Shared with Finn. Clingy lacing from a low beige head, clear dark amber body. Inviting aromas of leafy hops and caramel malts. Quite similar taste of caramel, bread, and leafy hops followed by resinous bitterness toward the ending. A bit short, but a nice English bitter. (Nottingham 12.10.2022),

Cask-conditioned at the Staffordshire Beer festival, Seven Stars, Bristol 6/10/10. Amber coloured with a slight, off-white head. Slightly sweet, malty flavour with some citrus and apricot fruit. Flavour had more fruitiness and earthy malts, before a pleasantly bitter finish. Drinkable.
