Tower 42 Tasting 2. Thanks to Paul. Almost clear dark brown beer, good tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry. Low carbonation. There is a point when malts are roasted hard enough that they just taste burned, some of that here and it’s associated bitterness. In stark and jarring contrast is milky sweetness. A little bitterish dark fruits. Smooth finish. Quite unpleasant.

Bottle split on the 42nd floor, thanks to Scopey, 10/11/15. Light black topped initially with a decent tan head that quickly dissipates to edgework. Nose is thin, papery, light chilli spice, roasted tones, menthol, faint cocoa. Taste improves with chocolate biscuit, raspberry jam, dark malt, light cocoa rub. Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Sub par and very basic for the style.

Bottle shared in London on the 42nd floor - many thanks to Paul. Pours deep brow with a foamy beige head. The nose has lightly tangy dark malts, cocoa, fruits. Medium sweet flavor with oily cocoa, earth, dried dark fruits. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, plenty of oily cocoa, moderate scorched earth bitterness, leathery dark fruits. Not bad.

Opaque black beer with a thin brown head with a rich, malty aroma and a touch of tart fruit in there too. Flavour has a touch of that fruitiness too as well as bitter hop to add to a more typical stout character. Gritty malt, dark chocolate. Lots going on. Delicious, and the flavour lingers nicely too. Not entirely removed from a black IPA, taste-wise, but the body is that of a stout.
