Our recent IPA, Holy Rakau, left us salivating for more New Zealand Rakau hops. We really enjoyed the intensely ripe tropical/fruity character it brought to the beer. So for this pale ale we explored Rakau’s potential with different American hops: Citra, Chinook and CTZ.

The beer is a bright, lightly golden yellow color. There’s a touch of haze to it. The head is thick and white, fine bubbles with a bit of rockiness. Some nice lacing. The aroma has a big sweet tropical hoppiness. Lots of kiwi, papaya, sugary lemons, lemongrass, tangerine, pineapple. Very sweet with a light woodsy flavor. Mild grapes, apples. Moderate bitterness. Lots of hop flavor in the taste. Light yeasty flavor. Fairly dry. Very easy to drink. Light feel with a touch of creaminess. Touch of chalkiness in the finish. Good stuff.

Bottleshare at Chez Smith. Thanks to Fergus. Almost clear gold beer, small cream colour head. Airy palate, modest fine carbonation. Light malt sweetness with fluffy malt cream. Hop spice up front followed by orange and floral lemon, pinch of lemon zest. Whisper of herb before a spicy finish. Hop spice continues to linger. Nice one!

Growler split in the Bespin cloud network, massive thanks to Fergus, 15/12/15. Clear golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is pissy citrics, Sorachi kick, mandarin, straw, light spice. Taste comprises lemon rind, straw, good sorachi punch, juicy hop, toasted bread, light grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid Sorachi affair.

Growler shared in London - massive thanks to Fergus for this one! Pours crystal clear yellow-gold with a frothy white head. Vibrant, fresh and juicy hop aroma, melon, slight vanilla, peach. Light-medium sweet flavor with relaxed pale bread sugars, more melon, papaya, tangerine, mellow bitterness. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous on the finish, continuing peach, a little pee, melon, pale bread, slight pine. Supple, nuanced and amazingly drinkable.

Growler big thanks to Fergus. It pours clear dark yellow - gold with a decent white head. The nose is big freshness, stinky sorachi ace, bubblegum, aniseed, light menthol and a hint of citrus peel. The taste is crisp, dry, clean, grapefruit peel, straw, minerals, lemon peel, light spice and wood with a dry finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Fresh and clean. Decent even if I don’t like Sorachi.
