George Cruikshank being the friend and illustrator for Charles Dickens is probably responsible for why life in the densely populated Victorian Islington, along with its colourful characters featured so often in the writer’s novels with Dickens drawing on the observations he made on his frequent visits to Cruikshank’s home and studio in Amwell Street. As a teetotaller Cruikshank probably would not have been tempted by our black IPA, but you can enjoy a pint or two of this citrusy, hoppy, spicy beer and consider how life has changed since the dark days of Dickensian London

Fra fat på brewpuben: nesten helt klar kobbergylden med flott skum helt ned. Deilig, lett krydret maltsmak med citrus i tillegg. Fin bitterhet.

Cask at the brewpub. It pours clear dark ruby-brown with a decent beige head. The nose is bitter-sweet, quite fruity, bizarre Irn Bru aspect, stewed orange and orange sherbet. The taste is bitter upfront, burnt pine, varnish, charred wood, pithy grapefruit, umami, salted caramel and liquorice. Finish is quite dry and toasted. Medium body and fine carbonation. Overall not bad at all with the aroma being particularly good.

Cask at the brewpub, 10/06/15. Mahogany brown with a decent beige covering that retains well. Nose is biscuit, toffee, light charr, woody notes, earthy hop. Taste comprises bitter hop, charr, red berry tones, light pine, cocoa sprinkling. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying close. Drinkable CDA but a little on the safe side, needs a hop injection !

Cask handpull at the brewpub. Black IPA straight out of the gate. Mahogany brown coloured pour with a steadfast speckled cream head. Aroma is a bit weird with pine needle hop and a sweet vanilla note, but also a plastic note. Hard to put my finger on it. Little citrus edge. Flavour is composed of toasted grains, little citrus edge to the hop, pine, semi sweet. Little plastic in the finish. Just about passable as a black IPA. Palate is medium light with lowish carbonation.

Cask at the brewpub. Pours clear reddish brown with a creamy tan head. Lots of floral hops in the nose, some roast, zesty orange rind. Medium sweet flavor with some piney oils, rindy orange, more flowers, earth, burnt toast. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Nicely balanced on the finish, further floral notes, mellow roast, rindy and zesty citrus, some grass and pine. Solid.
