Guinness The 1798 is the second offering of the Guinness Signature Series which offers a range of limited edition luxury beers. Utilizing the artistry of Guinness Master Brewers, this series features beers made from rare and highly sought after ingredients. The Guinness Signature Series(TM) gives beer drinkers more options for different occasions, from fine dining to exquisite gifting.

This Signature 1798 Double Extra Stout is a tribute to the original Old Vat House built in 1798. The brew is deep, rich, complex and extremely rare. It uses 100% malt, some crystal malt for the distinct caramel and chocolate smoothness on the palate, plus the world famous Guinness home roasted barley for the classic taste. This luxuriant brew is then finished over the original English oak wood of Old Vat House 1 from 1798, to bring out a unique subtle wood character steeped in history.

High Wycombe House Warming. Almost clear brown beer, small pale tan head. Light and semi dry palate, decent fine minerally carbonation. Thin dark malts but with a reasonably rich flavour. Mild roast. Little dark malt tang. Bitterish tangy dark fruits. Smooth semi dry finish. Hides the abv well but otherwise quite unremarkable. Hideously over priced. I wonder if this brewery could ever brew a real craft beer?

75cl bottle from Dublin-Airport. Nice smooth fresh nose. Smooth and thick, the beer starts intense and fresh sticky with lots of caramel. Not too sweetish, the wood is in the back, the beer is intense and dry. Voluminous, rich but still highly to drink for the 9%. Hints of woody fruit, nice and fresh caramel stout aroma, vanilla, deep and rich. Really a nice beer!

Bottle big thanks to Kenny. It pours darkest brown with a small tan headline. The aroma is rich roasted malt, loads of dark fruits, jammy berry, liquorice and fruit compote. The taste is smooth, rich roast, fruity, berry compote, jammy, spicy, light alcohol and cocoa with a dry, toasty finish. Medium - full body and fine, foamy carbonation. Tangy and fruity imperial stout. Not a huge amount of depth to it, but its actually pretty decent.

Bottle shared in High Wycombe - huge thanks to Jenny for this rare treat. Pours deep brown with a big, frothy tan head. The aroma has some milk chocolate, hints of berries, light toast. Medium sweet flavour with simple chocolate character, dried berries, hearty bread, fruitcake. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish with nice dark major character, more dark fruits, berries, milk chocolate, restrained roastted malts. Perhaps a bit simplistic, but enjoyable.
