Smoked beer is an acquired taste. So is sour/funky beer. We’ve acquired those tastes, as a result we present to you this Lichtenhainer: a 100% barrel-fermented, 100% beech-wood and oak smoked malt sour wheat.

Bottle shared at the JK Tasting - Craft Beer Co., Islington. Many thanks to JK. Pours unclear yellow with a creamy, white head. The nose holds lots of robust, hammy smoke. Light sweet flavour with further smoked meats - ham in particular - and a dash of moderating lemony tartness. Light bodied with average carbonation. Finishes smokey and hammy. Fun style.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a cloudy light yellow gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a light wheat smoke note with a decent amount of a lemony sour note. Flavor has strong sour lemon with some bitterness supported by a light smokiness.

At Fair State Mixed Culture event. Orange color. Lots of smoke in the aroma and the flavor. Sour yeast. Smoke flavor and a bacon character, which has become a cliche description for smoked beers, and a flavor I seldom perceive, but I do it get it here. Good beer.
