We think the russian tsar would have liked his stout this way. A dark, rich ale in which a generous sweetness with roasted malt bitterness. Serving temp.10°C/50°F. Great with vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate.

Bottle from Cunningham as part of Eu local swap 3/2019, thanks. Malty aroma and taste, chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, roasty notes, medium bitter, light sweet notes. Full body, malty chocolate bitter sweet finish with vanilla and light warming alcohol notes. Good.

I spotted this bottle from Nogne O when leaving Bergen on our trip home this summer. Likely my first Norwegian imperial stout, let us see how they do it. I see on the label that the .5 liter bottle was filled on February 13 of this year. The glass is a snifter, no particular reason. A regal black in color, viscous, with a spindly circle of eggshell brown foam. A good start with the smell, dark chocolate, wheat and perhaps some tobacco. And the drink speaks. Bakers chocolate, malt, smoke, cereal and a bit of hard candy. Good but not inspired.

Tap at good beer faucets. Dark brown, big golden brown bubbly head. Aroma smoke spice dark chocolate, lots of roast, background hint of strong booze, whiskey. Taste is full on, lots of roasty bitterness, touch of cream, spicy, burnt maltiness, bit of vanilla in the background. Spirit booziness is there again too. Can taste the percentage, but at the same time nice and smooth and creamy. Quite thick too. Got a bit of pine hoppiness further down and also some bitter coffee hints. Lots going on as you would expect. Pretty nice.

Bottle. Dark and opague, almost pitch black. Dark chocolate, cream and juniper in the aroma. A heavenly aroma BTW, I had trouble taking my nose out of the glass. Creamy with a thick mouthfeel. Coffee, pure chocolate and some burning alcohol. Hops are there, but the creamy texture and the chocolate and roast bitter flavors dominate, yet the balance is not far from perfection. Long bitter chocolate aftertaste. Extremely well made beer, one of the best I’ve had.
