Over the past few years we have been exploring texture. It has become an obsession. Abrahadabra is a smoothie inspired IPA aimed at bringing a creamy yet dry texture. Brewed with oats, wheat, lactose sugar, berries and citra hops.

Hazy deep copper and light ruby-tinted amber coloured body with a nice and relatively long-lasting off-white head, about three centimetres tall. Aroma of strawberries, light sour and tart notes, some very subdued and minimalistic hops with a ton of sugars near the end, some from lactose, but a lot of fruit-based sugars it seems. Medium-bodied; Hoppy notes at first that hit with some low alpha acids then show a touch of grain, but end with some strawberry, raspberries and a dose of the sugar at the end, with sweetness as the main contender at the end. Aftertaste is rich and flavourful with some dry, saison-like notes from the grain with a dose of sweetness as well as a balanced bitter flavour, which is nice and complex. Overall, a nice and enjoyable beer that is far less of an IPA and far more of a fruit-beer, but regardless, complex and enjoyable without too much fuss or bitterness in bad ways. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from GlenRo Spirit Shoppe in Monroe, Connecticut on 10-March-2018 for US$4,99 (3 for $15 bin) sampled at home in Washington on Easter Sunday, 01-April-2018.

Draft pour pint at Hop and Hound. A golden yellow pour with a thin fizz head. A melon and citrus fruit heavy aroma. Very inviting. Juicy citrus fruit, blended with a sweet cream flavor. Vanilla, cream, melon, citrus, slightly bittering late hop profile. Slight funk. Delicious, unique IPA here. Yum!

Bottle. Hazy golden body with a fizzy white head, diminishing. Aroma of citrus, toasted grain, lemon and light canned corn. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Tastes like a cream ale with DMG. In this case, the creamy texture heightens the unpleasant flavors. Not a fan.

22 ounce bottle into pint glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours slightly hazy pale straw color, with a 1-2 finger fairly dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big strawberry, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, mango, melon, vanilla, cream, lemon/orange zest, light pine, light bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, strawberry/vanilla, and light pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big strawberry, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, mango, melon, vanilla, cream, lemon/orange zest, pine, light bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of strawberry, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, mango, melon, vanilla, cream, lemon/orange zest, pine, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, strawberry/vanilla, and light pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, moderately sticky, and lightly creamy/grainy balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is a very nice fruited IPA. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, strawberry/vanilla, and light pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle pour at Caps & Taps. It pours a pale yellow color with a white head. The aroma is very herbal and dank. Lots of pot with hints of citrus and tropical fruit. The flavor is the same. Soft mouthfeel with super potent dank pot and hop spice. A little tropical pineapple, but mostly dank with medium bitterness. I like.

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours hazy light gold with a white head. Aroma suggests creamy strawberries. Med body or so. Flavor is milkish strawberry. Rather light in flavors - strawberries are easy to find. Nice - but not strongly flavored. Very smooth. But why? Not how, why?

A bit odd. Orangey yellow tan beer with a frothy white head. It’s a bit cloudy. Some lacing. The aroma is interesting. It’s a mix of a sorta juicy citrus-forward hoppiness, mild vanilla, mild strawberry and a nice background of wheat-spiced fresh pale malt. Limes, grapefruit and light sweet strawberries. The flavor has a bit more vanilla to it, particularly in the finish. Some definite lactose presence, almost like a tiny hit of artificial sweetener in the finish - it actually kinda works against the hops, though. Medium bitterness, which mostly picks up in the aftertaste. Less strawberry flavor than the aroma, though it’s definitely there. A lot of lime peel, probably the primary flavor, like a bitter citrus hit. It’s fairly dry, which is sorta odd because the beer feels like it should be sweet. Moderately creamy mouthfeel. They really did hit their goal of a dry but creamy, smoothie-ish beer, and it’s certainly interesting. The bitter lime against the vanilla and lactose on top of that creamier than a dry 6% abv IPA should be is fun to drink. Not something I’d want all the time, but it’s pretty tasty.

On tap at Grumpy’s NE. Pours a hazy pale yellow with a slight orange hue and a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a juicy citrus note with sweet grain and a decent amount of grapefruit underlying. Flavor has more of a grassy pine with some earthy citrus and a touch of grass.
