Bottled 330ml. -Hazy yellow/golden coloured, big white head, yeasty nose. Moderate malty, fruity, yeasty, bit spicy and metallic, pretty strong carbonation and moderate alcohol presence. Totally average.

33cl Bottle from Vonk. Clear golden orange colour, white head. Aroma of grain, alcohol, some fruity esters, banana, smells harsh. Flavour is medium sweet, light fruity, malty, grain, alcohol, some banana, alcoholic bitter finish. Light to medium bodied, over-carbonated. Very meh.

Catching up with this now - I have, for three years now, been overlooking the fact that apparently this Wieze brand is now owned by a company in Gijzegem, commissioning this beer from Roman, after taking it over from a ?brouwerij Wieze? in Wieze itself, which had in turn bought the rights from Haacht, which had in turn acquired it from the original Wieze family brewery, an old but classic 20th-century brewery that went bankrupt in the late nineties (I even remember this being mentioned in the news on television back then...). Long and complicated histories are not atypical for Belgian tripels, it seems, but the original Wieze brewery, genealogically linked to Palm, never had a tripel in its portfolio so it?s basically all about the logo, with which old(er) Belgian beer drinkers still are all too familiar. Anyway: this ?new? (to me) version has a medium thick, egg-white, moussy head with good retention and a clear, warm, pure golden colour (?old gold?) with vivid fizz rising up from the bottom. Restrainedly sweet and subtly ?rural? aroma of bread crust, green banana (no bubblegum), still warm white bread, honey taffy, old apple cake, dried ginger, camomile tea, moist white pepper, withered garden weeds, stewed turnip, caramelized endive, lucerne, artisanal honey, old ?jenever?, cold French fries, very faint hint of iron, very old cloves. Fruity onset, vivid, hints of Granny Smith apple (acetaldehyde?), banana (isoamylacetate but not overdone), yellow plum and white currant, sharp and fizzy carbonation with a numbing and distracting effect, minerally and ?souring? a little bit, residual white candi sugar sweetness on top of a ?full? but supple, lightly bready and slightly grainy malt middle, a tad honeyish here and there, phenolic spiciness showing up early but not overpowering anything, mildly spicy and leafy hop bitterness at the back drying the finish a bit but incapable of sufficiently halting the white candi sugar, estery and malt sweetness. Underneath all of this, a metallic ?zing? is perceptible as well, more or less in accordance with the iron-like accent in the nose; quite a lot of warming yet softish, wodka-like alcohol in the end as well, providing further drought and flirting with astringency. Something very weedy (or even green vegetable-like) lurks in the background as well and rises up retronasally even after swallowing - the hops, no doubt, releasing ?green? aromas but not in the most fresh or uplifting way. I have been wondering if this new incarnation of ?Wieze Tripel? could be an alias of Ename Tripel (given the fact that it?s brewed at Roman and has the same ABV), but I remember the latter as being a bit less sweet (in other words: better balanced) and less metallic - I guess only a side-by-side tasting would bring relief, but I will not bother with that as I do believe that this one is indeed made to a somewhat different recipe. In general, this is yet another tripel on the sweet (and alcoholic) side of the style, correct but boring at the same time, clearly an attempt to artificially and stubbornly keep alive a 20th-century brand which, with all due respect, belongs to another, bygone era in Western European beer history. Agreed, it does have its own character, but only upon very close inspection - unfortunately the previous version from that former ?Brouwerij Wieze? is too long ago for me to make an argumentative comparison, but as far back as my memory goes, this is not really an improvement and remains - with all my respect for the original brewery - a redundant beer. In fact, after rereading my tasting notes of this beer?s predecessor, I am beginning to believe it only went downhill from there... I do not have high hopes for the dark version, if this Gijzegem beer company has any intention at all to continue that one too, doubtlessly also in an amended version.

Bottle shared at Cafe den Uilenspiegel. Clear dark golden with a big white head. Aroma of weird fruit off notes, yeast, caramel and light malt. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Pours clear golden with a big, frothy, white head. The aroma contains grain, herbs, spices, citrus, hay and iron. It tastes medium fruity sweet and medium grassy bitter; dry, astringent, hoppy, metallic finish. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. Unconvincing. (Edited 20/5/18)

(Bottle, Lombard, Brussels, 14 Oct 2015) Golden colour with frothy, white head. Fruity, spicy nose with notes of tropical fruit, marzipan and dried pineapple. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, pineapple, candy sugar and a balanced spicy bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty, but on the sweet side. Quite nice.
