Houblons: Colombus, Azzaca, El Dorado, Amarillo, Sorachi Ace

The first BBP beer to be bottled in 75 cl bottles to my knowledge, and a special one, too, containing 1/3 Grenache wine must; the rest is a mixture of three malts including wheat malt, and hopped with four different hop varieties, most of them of a New World signature. Stumbled upon this at Vinogradoff, a wine bar in Ghent and in that sense an unlikely place to find a new ‘tick’ – nice place though, with a very welcoming owner. Snow white, quickly opening, bit irregular, mousy ring over a lightly hazy, straw blonde beer with warmer apricot hue, lightly hazy initially but clouded with sediment. Quite delicate, yet inviting aroma: obvious sweet white grape effect from the wine must, indeed sweet white wine and something cava-like as well but not as complex and tart as I may have been expecting, old wrinkled apples, pear, bread crumbs, apricot jam, white redcurrant, touch of moist white pepper, citric aspect (mandarin peel), vague hint of cloves, straw. Very lively fruitiness in the mouth, lots of white grape but lots of apple, pear and pineapple as well, lively carbonated in a refined, lambrusco-like way, smooth with a lightly powdery, nicely bready and wheat flour-ish malt profile blending seamlessly with the sweet white wine effect from the must, which adds a light vinous touch and mild, refreshing tartness in the end; soft grape skin tannic effects as well, but everything remains very ‘friendly’ and accessible. Yeasty-bready and mild citric and herbal hop bitter notes in the end, dryish, with some lingering grape skin and bread crumb effects, as well as some warming alcohol. Very pleasant aperitif beer, in all, quite surprising and very elegant while remaining very accessible as well. Not far removed from Achouffe’s Chateau d’Ychouffe, but the hops chosen here are more expressive and blend better with the fruitiness of the wine must so I’d prefer this one over Ychouffe any day.

F: big, white, average retention. C: pale gold, hazy. A: malty, light orange, bit grapes, mellow tropical fruits, bit grassy. T: light sour fruity, grapes, bit vinous, funky, orange peels, medium body, medium carbonation, a lot of grapes here, refreshing yet not for me like something between a beer and a wine similar to Château d'Ychouffe Rosé so not my thing yet not bad made still, 12,5 cl sample @ brewery.
