Sampled at Max’s Taphouse in Baltimore. Great example of what your mom always taught you: don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Looks like a porter, dark, oily, opaque black with a white, creamy head. Mild aroma that has some coffee, nuts and limes. Flavor is mild citrus, key limes, spice and some yeast. Soft and a bit chalky on the tongue with some lasting hop bitterness. I had been seeking this beer out for a while and although it looked like a winner, it disappointed me.

Cask at Rogue, San Francisco. Cloudy mahogany colour, surprisingly rich head. Aroma of grapefruits that grdually turns into a flavour of coffee and molasses. Fruity and quite sweet. Masively hoppy with near full body. Soft if a bit mushy mouthfeel. Long very bitter finish.

Draught at Popeyes. Pours dark with minimal head. Aroma of citrus hops and pine, very pleasent. Tasty hop flavor with pine stronger than the citrus, though it’s still there. Finishes pretty bitter. Very good ale, suprisingly delicious.

WBF-Raleigh. From John’s Locker Stock. Dark brown body with a large creamy light brown head. Heavy malt aroma. Caramel molassas and roasted malt flavor. Somewhat unbalanced with the heavy bitter malt.

(On tap) Slightly hazy dark brown with an orange hue. Creamy, beige head. Fresh, piney aroma. Lightly caramelish flavours dominated by great aroma hops and some accents of peach. The finish is distinctly bitter. 240307

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. John’s Locker series. Murky red-brown body, thin-medium buff head. Intense piney, citrusy aroma, bright, mostly sugared grapefruit and berries. Strong bready, caramely malts pair with piney, grapefruity hops in the body. The hops leave a bitter film on the tongue. Heavier malts than I expected. I did notice slight oxidation. A solid ASA.

On tap @ the Mellow Mushroom in Tampa. Poured hazy dark brown with tan head. The aroma has some 120L crystal malts. But the main component was the hops. I smell pine needles, grass and grapefruit hoppiness. The taste was full grapefruit and pine hop bitterness accompanied by some semi sweet roasted maltiness (something like 90 or 120L) and caramel. It actually tastes just a bit like Stone’s ABA. For me that is most welcomed. Very nice brew leaving a pleasant hop bitterness behind in the aftertaste.

300th rated beer for me, eh. I think I’ll have another beer.

On Tap at Bitter Creek in Boise Deep brown witha light tan head. Nice hoppy aroma that suggests of plenty if IBUs to follow. The suggestion was well founded. Quite strong bitter hoppy flavor as well with sufficient malt back bone. A bit dark and slightly roasted ina burnt wood sort of way. Gotta love a berr named after a guys dog!
