310ml bottle from School of Animals, Kuala Lumpur. Poured almost black in colour with a mostly lasting frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malts, light caramel. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet, with a mostly smooth, roasty, sweet creamy caramel, earthy, herbal, light hop bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation. I read the most recent reviews that were all so bad, however the last review was nearly six years ago and the early reviews were pretty decent. I was pleasantly surprised though and this turned out to be a very reasonable beer. It lacks a little carbonation, but hey, it made up for that in other areas.

Bottle from Hanadaya. Very dark brown/black colour with small golden head. Aroma is a bit Belgian, some sourness, lots of dark fruits, slightly roasty and some syrupy sweetness too. A real mixed bag. Taste is similarly mixed, initial sourness fading into something like a really sweet belgian dubbel. Quite fruity. Maybe a touch thin, but I actually quite like it for it strangeness. The sweet and sour thing is strangely alluring.

Bottle 330ml (AIH40)
Dark brown color, beige head. Licorice, milky, toasted aroma, slightly medicinal. Light to medium-bodied. Licorice, toasted malts, medicinal in a good way. Some bitterness in the finish. Excellent palate for this ABV. Schwarzbier with lots of taste, probably not a lager.

Bottled@AIH40. Brown colour, small beigeish brown head. Aroma is mild nuts, some smoked wet wood, mild rye as well as some liquorice to it. Flavour is mild roasted notes, some toffee, ashes as well as some mild metallic notes. Mellow bitterness to it as well. Rather dry wooden notes. Pleasant, and surprisingly bodied brew.

Bottle from Yamaoka, 4.5% Schwarzbier served in a beer mug. Inky black pour with a good 2 fingers of tan foam that dissipates fast leaving behind no lacing. Looks more like a stout than a schwarz to me. Umami, soy & licorice nose. Body is light to medium, this thing oozes candy black licorice flavor with a surprisingly nutty bitter slightly ascerbic finish. Not for me as I dislike dark licorice. My wife liked it. Once it warmed up some coffee came through and fudge like notes though for me it never really gels.

Pours black with a fading tan head.Nose shows roasted malt, a chalky clean agent note, industrial notes and ash. Not great...Flavours include roasted malt and treacle along with an astringent note. Again, not particularly tempting.Body feels a bit watery.Quite possibly the worst dark beer I’ve tried.

Bottle, 10C. Black with a tan head that soon fizzes away. Strange aroma of sour mocha with singed caramel and salty dutch licorice. Smooth texture. Tastes as it smells - plenty of salty licorice - with some plums and an unwelcome touch of metal. Peppery bitterness emerges after a while. Odd.

A slightly sour, very dry, somewhat bitter concoction that I don’t really know how to describe. Very un-beer-like. Some compared it to soy sauce. I didn’t think so really, but the feeling that comparison gives you is about right. Original and in that way interesting, but I don’t need another.

Pours a deep brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted, sweet caramel, coco, molasses, and anise. Body is very thin. Flavor is roasted, coffee-like malt, and molasses. Has a tangy, metallic bite on the side of the tongue. Finish is sorta bitter and metallic. Totally lacking. Needs to have a fuller mouth, less metallic, and more flavor overall. Meh.
