Old rating from 2002 - Pint from the tap at the brewpub, pours caramel colour with a off white foamy head. Aromas & tastes of lemon, flora, herbs, biscuit, earth, spice, caramel, toffee & malt. Medium body. Smooth moderate bitter finish

Poured into an English pint glass, the appearance was a hazy burnt orange almost light brown color with a cap of a little white foamy head. Sly roaming speckled lace.
The aroma had the Fuggles sweet to estery floral/herbal qualities coming across the malts somewhat in an acceptable \"soapy\" fashion. Biscuit sweet malts plead their case for the balance.
The flavor blends all of the previously aromas together mostly sweet with that smooth soapiness coming into flow in the aftertaste and finish.
The palate was almost medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Pretty smooth all around.
Overall, as an ESB, it works, I get it and don’t mind it.

Bottle from a trade with Rustyham. Pours hazy amber color with off white head. Bready malt and earthy aroma. Moderately sweet malty flavor, a little toasty with some caramel. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Thanks Nick.

Sample at the brewpub. The beer is a dark amber color with a medium thin and creamy bone white head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Mild hops and earthy malt in the nose. Medium, smooth body with flavors of resiny hops, earthy malt and fruit. The finish is biscuity malt with a touch of floral hops left behind. Decent overall.

Cask at the Bridgeport Brewery. Faint aroma of dark fruit and caramel malt. Tart flavor, with cherry and light hops, mostly bittering hops. Cask version was rather dead. Here again, the keg version was much better, but this is the one that got rated.

On CASK at BrewPub Portland OR, Pours out a hazy copper topped with a off white head. Pretty good. Some light wood along with some light hops. I think this style is starting to grow on me. Or I have just had a few good ESB’s as of late.

Cask at the brewpub at the brewery. Clean caramel aroma. Clear dark amber color. Off-white head that sticks around. Soft, luscious, fruity, malty with floral/fruity hop. The bitter balancing the malt does not seem to be pine or citrus. Fresh foral/fruity finish, hints of malt here at the end, mild bitter, and some possible citrus sour at the back of the mouth. Fantantastic.

Bottle. Poured amber with a thick lasting head. Faint malty aroma. Mild flavour that’s well balanced between malt and hops. A modest finish. This is a workaday unassuming bitter that is good on a warm day.

Not bad. This is very sweet for an ESB, sweet malt rather than bitter malt. Considerable hop presence for the style. Its not bad, but too sweet.
