Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.
Description
A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a very nice two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, cacao powder, yeast, bread, raisins, malt and a bit of prunes - crazy sweet smelling. Medium-bodied; Nice fresh prune and plum flavour at first with some good milk chocolate and roasted malt, with a touch of coffee and oatmeal at the end. Aftertaste shows a lot of roasty qualities with a ton of sweetness, but not overly alcohol or dry flavours to cloy the palate. Overall, a very nice sweet stout that isn’t overly done and showing too much harsh flavours - great for this time of the year (Christmas). I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 18-November-2011 for US$2.35 sampled at home in Washington on 22-December-2011.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured slick and black with a large soapy dark brown head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was dryish roasty malts with strong Baker’s chocolate, marshmallows and faint smoke, dry roasty malts and peanuts. The flavor was strong Baker’s chocolate with light marshamallow, vanilla and coffee. The finish was long with cocoa and coffee and turned somewhat dry and bitter. Thick and chalky texture. Well done.

Pours a solid dark brown with the faintest of ruby highlights and a 3 finger mocha head that dissipates but never really leaves. Tons of lace impales itself on the glass. I could smell chocolate as soon as I popped the cap on this one. Fresh ground coffee, milk chocolate, chocolate syrup, and some brown sugar and toffee round out the nose. Taste is mostly chocolate syrup, and seems artificial. Brown sugar toffee and butter round out the taste. Leaves a lingering bitter chocolate taste in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel, medium body, light carbonation. I liked this one a bit. I could see myself drinking a few of these, but the artificial chocolate twang is definitely a turn off.

Bottle (Thanks to joss!): As black as ink, stable mid-sized tanned head; distinctive aromas of sweet milk-chocolate and blueberries (!) in the nose; surprisingly dry bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied, soft; gentle chocolatey and berry-like flavours in the finish, followed by an illusion of cacao-powder in the aftertaste. Very nice liquid fruit-cake.....

(bottle, 35.5cl) Black coloured hue with a light-brown medium-sized foamy head. Sweet and distinctively chocolate-malty and moderately roasted aroma with notes of blueberries. Surprisingly bitter flavour with a dry mouthfeel, medium to light bodied with a smooth carbonation. Roasty malty base with notes of dark and milk chocolate with berry-fruity accents; dry and moderately roasty malty finish with notes of chocolate and fruits lingering into the aftertaste. A superb liquid blueberry-muffin. 16.II.11

Bottle from the winter sampler. Pours a very dark brown color with a medium sized brown head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, cocoa. Very sweet. Faint roasty and dusty notes if you look for them. The taste is roasted malts, cocoa, chocolate, a milky note, a faint leafy hops. Medium bodied. Decent beer.

12 oz bottle. Motor oil color. Thin tan head that left AWESOME lacing and covered my glass on the way down. A pleasant sweet DEEP chocolate aroma that made me think of extra dark chocolate candy. Palate is sweet dark chocolate with a DEEP intoxicating ,roasted coffee flavor. For some; this maybe to sweet of a stout, but not for me! If you like sweet stout, buy this!

Bottle from 12-pack variety winter. Pours black with beige head. Aroma is of chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is creamy milk chocolate and in a way the texture resembles it. Not really bitter, but sweet and liquor-like in a sense. I had this beer before, but earlier in the season and I must say that I would have enjoyed it more if it had been colder outside when I drank it. But still, this beer is superbly tasty and has to be one of the best values out there, in terms of quality (and alcohol content).
