One cannot truly understand the depth of the Czech Brewing philosophy until he/she has made it to the country and hook up with the greatest beer inspirations and personalities of the Czech Republic.
Back in November 2018, Our brewmaster was selected to be part of a Czech Republic Trade Mission hosted by the Czech American Embassy and Canadian Consulate Economic & Trade Sections. This trip was such a revelation and by far far one of our brewmaster‘s best beer trips ever.
Godspeed‘s fascination for the Czech Brewing philosophy and culture is growing day by day. This Tmavý Ležák 12º is only the begining of a long journey and friendship with the Czech brewing culture and people. We are now studying and sourcing some of the finest Czech raw materials for designing our new Czech Lagers made with the true Czech brewing philosophy.
We’ve never been that excited!

Dark, like Schwarzbier dark. Thin head. Lighttish body, some toastiness. A nice sweetness in there as well, good balance. Just enough bitterness. Solid.

On tap at The Magnet, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a medium tan head. Aroma has a deep toasted—almost roasted—malt base that’s unusual for a dunkel as such, with some earthiness, and toasted nuttiness. Flavour is more laid-back, with toasted malt, earthiness, and a touch of toasted nuts. Earthy, dry finish. Well-made.

355ml can. Pours an opaque black with a large, foamy, long lasting, tan head that leaves soapy curtains of lace. Aroma of roasted malt, peat, dark chocolate and nuts. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, licorice, peat, dark chocolate and coffee in a dry, mild bitter finish. Light body with a watery texture and soft carbonation. Tasty and easy to drink.

Can from Westhill Service Station. It pours thicker than expected.... darkest brown to black with a tan head. The aroma is dark and decadent, deep roasted character, dark chocolate, coffee beans, some umami, liquorice, mellow smoke and some rocky road. The taste is quite slick and thick, dark roasted malt, some bitterness, umami, liquorice, deep coffee character, charred, burnt toast, puff of smoke and a hint of acidity with a dry, toasty finish. Medium+ body, moderate carbonation and a surprisingly thick mouth feel. A big robust dark lager.

Can from The Beerhive. Black body with ruby highlights and a thick tan head that slowly fades. Pours like a nitro beer but I don’t think it is. Steady carbonation. Patchy lacing. Aroma of copper, charred wood and flat coke. Flavour of Worcestershire sauce, chocolate, toast and a sharp, berry-like finish. Medium to full body with a frothy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Full flavoured and high quality.
